Writer fell through grate on Burkesville Street sidewalk Writer whose name is on file but chose to remain anonymous. His letter strengthens the argument for Mayor Hardwicks goal of removing tripping hazards from the sidewalks in Columbia. Since you are speaking on the topic of sidewalks in Columbia. There is a drain with a metal grate over it behind Red Brick Studios in the back alley. The drain is not properly covered and it is missing one of the slats. I actually fell into the drain during the first day of downtown days last year. The square was blocked off and I had just left First and Farmers Bank and was walking back to my car. As I was walking around the corner of Red Brick Studios I received a cellphone call. As I was putting the phone to my ear and saying hello, out of nowhere I immediately fell into the drain with one leg. My foot slipped through the cracks and I fell all the way up to my knee. As I was falling I dropped my phone and was in immediate shock because I didn't know what was happening. I wasn't badly hurt other than being bruised all the way up to my knee for a week. I actually was really lucky, by not being seriously injured. If it were an elderly person or a small child then they might have been badly hurt. It might be worth checking out and mentioning on your website about the sidewalk issue. You can take a picture of it because it still is not fixed. If you run the story, I don't necessarily want my name tied to it. I just thought it would be worth bringing attention to the issue. This story was posted on 2016-02-03 22:27:07
