News from Lindsey Wilson College Wrestling

Trailing 18-9 with three matches to go, the No. 9-ranked Lindsey Wilson wrestling team dug deep and won all three final matches to come from behind and defeat Campbellsville (KY) 19-18 in front of a frenzied crowd inside Biggers Sports Center on Thursday night, January 28, 2016.

The Blue Raiders (8-5, 1-0 Mid-South Conference West Division) made their lone home dual of the season a memorable one as Chico Adams took down his opponent with 10 seconds to go in the final period at the heavyweight class to secure the last-second victory for Lindsey Wilson.

Lindsey Wilson opened with an early 9-0 lead, but Campbellsville (10-4, 1-1 MSC West) roared back by winning the next five matches to take an 18-9 lead with three weight classes to go.

Faced with must-win scenarios, the trio of Matt Walker, Jake Maupin and Adams all came in clutch with nail-biting victories down the stretch to score 10 points over the final matches and complete the comeback.

The Blue Raiders were the first to dent the scoreboard as James Flint (ranked No. 14 at 125 pounds) got things started with a 7-5 decision win over Christian Clary (No. 13 at 125). Flint and Clary traded points throughout the first two periods but Flint was able to secure a decisive takedown late in the third period and earned a ride time point to put Lindsey Wilson ahead 3-0.

A forfeit by the Tigers at 133 pounds made it a 9-0 lead for the Blue Raiders.

Campbellsville finally got on the board at 141 pounds after Jaedin Sklapsky defeated Logan Hatfield with an 8-3 decision. Sklapsky was able to secure three takedowns and prevent Hatfield from grabbing any takedowns of his own to jumpstart the Tigers on an 18-0 run.

Evan Loe battled hard at the 149-pound class, but Andrew Hoskins was able to edge him out with a 6-3 decision to make it a 9-6 match.

Bryce Hoffman started fast at 157 pounds as he took down Kyle Terry (No. 5 at 157) and secured an early four-point near fall to assume a 6-0 lead. Hoffman nearly secured a pin during the near fall scramble, but he was unable to stick Terry to the mat. Terry then rallied and collected three take downs of his own and a four-point near fall in the third period to take the match 13-7 and bring things level in the dual at 9-9.

The Tigers took their first lead of the night when Sean Black (No. 6 at 165) pinned Freer Mace 50 seconds into the opening period at 165 pounds to make it a 15-9 Campbellsville lead.

Campbellsville stretched that lead to 18-9 after Justin Brown (No. 8 at 174) was able to take down Rhodes Bell (No. 12 at 174) in overtime to grab an SV-1 3-1 win.

With their backs against the wall, the Blue Raiders began pushing back beginning at 184 pounds as Matt Walker (No. 13 at 174) wrestled up a class and took on No. 3-ranked Chuck Sharon. It was a wild back-and-forth match from the start as Sharon took down Walker, only to have Walker reverse and grab a four-point near fall on Sharon. In the second period, Sharon reversed on Walker, only to have Walker reverse right back and grab a two-point near fall. Walker continued to work and snagged one more two-point near fall to rack up just enough points for a 15-7 major decision and make it an 18-13 match.

Jake Maupin (No. 13 at 197) and Nate Knauf (No. 10 at 197) battled hard at 197 pounds, but neither grappler was able to secure a takedown. In the second period, Knauf escaped for one point, but only after Maupin rode him for one minute and seven seconds. In the final period, Maupin secured a quick escape in seven seconds, leaving him right at the limit for the required one minute of ride time point. Maupin then pushed away all of Knauf’s takedown attempts to hold on for the 2-1 win and bring the dual to an 18-16 score, making the 285-pound class the decisive one.

Adams (No. 5 at 285) met Terrell Moore (No. 15 at 285) in the final match, one of five matches to feature two ranked opponents on the evening.

Adams was the first to strike as he used Moore’s dig attempts to his advantage, lifting and throwing his opponent across his body for an early takedown. But then Adams was hit with a one-point unsportsmanlike penalty and Moore later escaped to make it 2-2. Adams and Moore each escaped in their respective down periods in the second and third to make it 3-3.

With the clock winding down, Adams once again used his explosiveness to shoot for Moore’s legs, bringing down his opponent and dragging his feet inbounds to secure the takedown with 10 seconds to go. Moore escaped with one second left but Adams had done enough to win the match and secure the dual victory for the Blue Raiders 19-18.

The victory moves the all-times series between Lindsey Wilson and Campbellsville to an even 4-4, but the Blue Raiders have now won four straight over the rival Tigers.

Prior to the dual, Joe Cozart was presented with his national championship ring for capturing the NAIA title in 2015 at 157 pounds, while Mace was honored as the lone senior on the squad.

Lindsey Wilson now has a quick turnaround as the Blue Raiders head to Lebanon, TN., for the Cumberland (TN) Open set to begin on Saturday morning.
