Click on headline for complete story with photo(s) By Eric Sexton College & Career Readiness Counselor, Metcalfe County High School On Thursday, January 28, 2016 twenty seven Metcalfe County High School students and six Metcalfe County Middle School students traveled to Somerset, KY to the Lineman Training Center and Somerset Community College. The students represented multiple grade levels, and high school students completed an online application to attend this trip, funded by the KY AHED grant. Students were received at the Lineman Training Center by Carol Wesley and Dean Rhodes. Rhodes, program coordinator, spoke to the students about careers in the field and demands of the job. He also toured the students in their modern facility showing them the indoor training environment. Students were in awe to learn about this profession and very impressed with Somerset's program. Next students traveled to Somerset Community College's main campus where they were met by admissions counselor Donnia Vanschoyck and given a tour of the south campus programs, specifically, aviation, diesel and auto mechanics, welding and robotics. Donnia arranged for several program leaders to speak with the students about their programs and what it takes to obtain certifications; as well as the job outlook. Metcalfe County High School students were accompanied by MCHS FRYSC Coordinator Judy Thompson and Eric Sexton, GRREC College and Career Readiness Counselor. This trip was funded through the KY AHED grant and in-kind services provided by Metcalfe County Schools FRYCS and kidFRIENDLy, Race to the Top grant. This story was posted on 2016-01-29 06:13:56
