The ACHS Academic Team won the 2015 Green River Regional Academic League Championship on Monday, December 7. Since the league was first formed in 2007, Adair County has won every league championship, this year making it nine years in a row.

The team plays on Monday nights over a three-month-long season, and this year the team accomplished a first. At the coaches meeting in early September, the league approved Adair County to enter two full varsity teams to compete. The first team of Rebecca Montgomery, Eli Jackson, Courtney Green, Zane Sanders, Dylan Pendleton, Samuel Willis, Erwin Ruczienski, and Arabella Caldwell swept through the regular season and league tournament undefeated. Adair's second varsity team of Austin Bradshaw, Treyton Grant, Ben Hancock, Trevor Smith, and Jaiden Taylor finished second in the league both in the regular season and in the tournament.

"The idea at the beginning of the year was to apply to get two teams from the same school accepted," Coach Reliford explained, "because we realized early on that we had the numbers to be able to take two full teams into competition each week of the league, and we wanted to try to push Varsity experience a little earlier than in years past. We know that we can develop a good set of players each and every year, so as an entire team, we set a long-range Fall goal beyond just getting experience and sought to finish 1-2 and represent our program's depth and success that way."

As it turns out, Coaches Brett Reliford and Vicki Leibeck set a goal that the students did not take lightly. The end result was an unprecedented 1st and 2nd Place finish that the entire team was proud of.

"Most teams propose entering a second team as a way of just getting experience. The magnitude of winning the league with not only one varsity team, but two full representative teams taking the top two spots is huge. The final match of the tournament was a fun atmosphere to say the least. Both teams were very proud of each other, and we had a little bit of a festive vibe before the match even started, which is not something that often happens in a pressure-packed championship scenario."

In addition to the team's Quick Recall wins, the awards for individual Written Assessments were announced at Monday's championship night event. Just under 75 students representing five different schools competed in the individual events. Adair County took 1st Place in four of the six categories.

The medal tally was led by seniors Treyton Grant, Rebecca Montgomery, Zane Sanders, Eli Jackson, and Courtney Green, who all won 2 individual medals a piece. Grant took 1st Place in both Language Arts and Arts and Humanities, and Montgomery finished in a tie with Grant in Language Arts and earned 3rd Place in Arts and Humanities. This marked Mongtomery's third straight year of winning the Language Arts category in the league. Eli Jackson took 1st Place in Science and nabbed the 4th Place medal in Arts and Humanities. Zane Sanders finished in 2nd Place in both Social Studies and Arts and Humanities. Courtney Green took home the 3rd Place award in both Math and Language Arts.

The team's rejuvenated focus on Science this year also proved successful for Sophomore Ben Hancock, who finished in 2nd Place in the event, his second straight Top 5 finish in the category. Freshmen Jaiden Taylor and Samuel Willis made a first year impact by finishing 4th and 5th Place respectively. Another Freshman, Arabella Caldwell, was just one question away from a Top 5 finish as well. In Social Studies, 9th Grader Trevor Smith confirmed the amount of work that has gone into this season's practices and preparation as he grabbed 3rd Place honors in Social Studies. Teammate Austin Bradshaw claimed 5th Place in the event.

The team had a successful run in the Composition category this year as well. Senior Wes Stone finished in 1st Place. Junior Courtney Foster took home 4th Place, and Sophomore Sydney Waggener captured the 5th Place slot. This was the first time any of the students had ever competed in the event.

Overall, the team took four out of the top five places in Science and Arts and Humanities, and the team claimed three out of the top five places in Social Studies, Language Arts, and Composition. The Green River Regional Academic League features teams from Taylor, Russell, Campbellsville, Green, and Adair.

The team now begins its post-season Governor's Cup preparation for January as they target the District Championships in the first leg of the Governor's Cup event, which will be held at Adair County High School on January 30. The Quick Recall event is a spectator event that anyone can attend. Adair County heads into the competition as defending Champions for the past ten consecutive years.
