Death is the second in Kentucky mines in 2015

News from Commonwealth News Center

Frankfort, KY (16 Sep 2015) - An employee of the Sebree Mine in Webster County died early this morning when the continuous miner head he was repairing fell, crushing him. The miner has been identified as 29-year-old Rickey Thorpe of Dawson Springs, KY.

The accident occurred at approximately 2:20amCT. There were no other injuries reported. Sebree Mine is an underground mine operated by Alliance Coal.

Investigators with the Kentucky Division of Mine Safety are on-site investigating the accident and have closed the mine until further notice.

This is the second mine-related fatality in Kentucky this year. In May, a truck driver at a Pike County surface mine died when he was pinned between a road grader and a truck.
