Adair County School Board sets tax rate at 51.7 cents

Board leaves rates unchanged on motor vehicles, utilities, aircraft (exempt), and watercraft. Rate change will amount to $3 on average tax bill of $30,000.

By Ed Waggener

The Adair County School Board voted for a compromise tax rate which will slightly elevate receipts midway between a "compensating rate" or revenue neutral, and the maximum 4% tax increase Kentucky law allows.

The board voted, 3-1, in a special session held this morning, Thursday, August 27, 2015, at 8amCT, to set the rate at 51.7 cents per $100 of assessments, without exonerations (an increase which would have allowed to board to recover past year's losses because of exonerations. The prior rate was 50.5 cents.
The new rate will bring in about $80,000 more in revenue. It will mean an annual increase of approximately $3 on the average tax bill, Finance Officer Renae Smith said.

The 3-1 vote came on a motion by Member Mike Harris (Division 5), with a second by Lisa Burton (3), who were joined in the affirmative by Chairman Floyd Burton. Member Terry Harvey (1) voted no in the show of hands vote.

Last year, total property taxes, including real and personal taxes, were set to raise $3,261,731 - $2,860,648 on real property and $401,083. The new rate will bring in a total of approximately $3,341,731.

The board voted to leave the following rates unchanged:
  • Motor vehicle rates at 56.3 cents per hundred
  • Utilities 3 percent
  • Aircraft, exempt
  • Water craft 51.7 cents per hundred
  • Cable, 3 percent
The vote followed a discussion by the board. During this phase of the meeting no citizen's appeared to comment.

A second item, approval of the BG-5 Form for the Career Readiness Center, was tabled.
