C/AC Chamber seminar aimed at help for small businesses

There will be a free Columbia/Adair County Chamber of Commerce employer incentives and employee opportunities seminar starting at 5:30pmCT, Thursday, September 3, 2015 in the basement conference room, Columbia-Adair Chamber, 201 Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY. Attendees are asked park at the back of the Chamber building and use the basement entry.

Registration is underway starting today, Thursday, August 20, 2015. The seminar offers help for programs which have salary subsidies for employers, and provide work opportunities for employees.

This seminar will provide brief informational presentations on four employer/employee programs, the Kentucky Small Business Tax Credit (KSBTC), Experience Works, the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority Work Study Program, and the On-The-Job Training Program. Presenters will answer specific program questions and be available to talk individually at the end of the Seminar.


Overview of programs to be presented:
  1. The Kentucky Small Business Tax Credit (KSBTC) presented by Marilyn LeBourveau, Project Manager Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development, Office of Entrepreneurship - This program is available to most for-profit small businesses including, retail, service, construction, manufacturing and wholesale employing 50 or fewer full-time employees. If a business has hired, or plans to hire at least one new full-time employee, and has or will invest at least $5,000 in new equipment or technology in the next or past 24 months, the business may be eligible to apply for the small business tax credit ranging from $3,500 to $25,000 per calendar year depending on the number of people hired and the investment made.
  2. Lindsey Wilson College Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority Work Study Program presented by Ashley Miller, Lindsey Wilson College Director of Career Services - If your business already has a LWC student working, or if your business is looking to hire part-time help, attend this seminar to find out the benefits of participating in the Lindsey Work Study Program. Students interested in seeking employment through the Work Study Program must complete the Program application available at the Lindsey Career Center, if they are (1) a Lindsey student taking at least six (6) credit hours, (2) not already participating in another work study program (3) financially eligible (4) a Kentucky resident and (5) the position relates to their major. Participating employers select students they wish to hire from among those eligible. Students are allowed to work up to 20 hours while school is in session, and up to 40 hours per week during school breaks. The program pays the business of employment $2.00 per hour for every hour the student works on a monthly basis.

  3. The Experience Works Program presented by Teresa A. Stokes, Experience Works Employment and Training Coordinator - Based on an employee's employment skills, interests and goals, applicants meeting the Experience Works criteria are assigned to qualified nonprofit 501 (C) (3) organizations or government agencies that need additional manpower, and have the ability to provide supervised training. While participants receive on the job training, supervision and experience from their host agencies, their training wages and fringe benefits are paid by Experience Works for up to 4 years. Program applicants must be a Kentucky resident eligible to work in the United States, age 55 or older, unemployed, and have an annual family income of not more than 125% of the established federal poverty income guidelines ($14,588 per year or less for a family of one or $19,663 or less for a family of two).

  4. Cumberlands Workforce Investment Area On-The-Job Training Program presented by Lisa U. Gosser, WIA Business Liaison/Career Manager, Lake Cumberland Area Development District, Inc. - The Workforce Investment Program offers employers' salary reimbursement for employee on the job training. Participating businesses must have a starting wage of $9.50 or above, the minimum amount of employees must be 8-10, and the employee has to be a new hire. Additional program business and employee eligibility guidelines will be provided at the Seminar.
