The newly installed signs read, "Dr. Martin Luther King Memorial Highway" after the dedication held today in Columbia. Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials from District 8, members of state, city and county government and the Columbia/Adair Human rights Commission were in attendance with the family of the late Ralph Willis who made the original request for the designation.

The MLK Memorial Highway officially begins on Hwy. 61 south of town at the 12.2 mile marker (measured from the Cumberland County line to the Green County line) near the Veterans Memorial Bypass and goes to the LBN Cumberland Parkway.

Rev. Bobby Bowe hailed this as a great day for Columbia and Adair County. He said, "we appreciate the work of the officials who worked to get it accomplished and honor the late Ralph Willis who began several years ago requesting of local officials that this become a reality." He said that initially, Bro. Willis envisioned the highway to go from the square to the bypass. Rev. Bowe asked that it go on to the parkway "because of what Dr. King did for the entire world representing all people in a non-violent way." He said he will continue to communicate with the state on the possibility of expanding the length of the designated roadway.

Rep. John BAM Carney (Ky 51 - Taylor and Adair Counties) said to those in attendance that as a history teacher he gets to teach Dr. King’s legacy every year and feels it’s a great day to come together and set an example to our nation for unity. He said he is proud to have helped bring about this accomplishment. Rep. Carney also brought a message from Sen. Max Wise who is attending the Southern Legislative Conference being held in Savanna, GA this year and will be coming to Kentucky next year.

Adair County Judge Executive Mike Stephens, Mayor Curtis Hardwick and former Mayor Mark Harris all spoke briefly, sharing their pride in this moment representing unity in Adair County.

Leetta Bridgewater Willis spoke for her late husband, Ralph, thanking all those who helped make his wish for the highway designation a reality.
