Mike Watson: Tally on damage from tree falling in cemetery

By Mike Watson, Adair County Historian

Columbia City Cemetery - Damage from a large ash tree that fell last week as result of high winds.

In the old section, the destruction could have been considerably worse, but only ten stones took the brunt of the fall. Nine knocked off their bases, one broken. The tree and limbs have been cleared away. The size of the tree is indicated by the huge stump.

One of the stones toppled was that of Colonel Frank Lane Wolford, famed veteran of the Mexican War and Civil War, teacher, ...lawyer, Adjutant General of Kentucky, and U.S. Congressman. His is the large, square obelisk lying inside the bounds of the adjoining lot. The broken stone is that of a daughter.

Stones will soon be reset, hopefully.
