Comment on Countdown: 48 days of Summer Vacation left A rational rant against the Back to School Countdown Reminder on CM. It's backward, this 60 year old little boy who is enjoying the 'sweaty bliss' in the zippety-do-dah days of Summer Vacation in Gradyville, KY. Instead of a foreboding countdown, he says, magazine should a 'count UP the glorious days of summer as they transpire with all of their great memories.' To which we have no rebuttal. - EW Click on headline for complete commentary By Guy Babin Mr. Chief Editor in Charge, et. al., Over the course of the last several weeks I've taken notice of the relentless back-to-school countdown your cherished community publication has disseminated with exacting accuracy. Not one "usually" to criticize, point a finger, nor complain (don't ask my betrothed); my constitution does cause me to ponder the intent. And not on just a singular dimension. First, as a young boy in the country, summertime was a sweaty bliss--days swimming in the creek, haulin' hay for gas folding money, fishing, and flirting with my favorite country sweetie. No homework, tests, controlling schedules, nor demanding teachers. My second point - the teachers. Did ya inadvertently forget about them, Ed? To complete the second dimension of my rant, I'll wager a nickel the teachers most likely don't cotton to the back to school countdown either. Not to imply they aren't dedicated to their vital and appreciated calling, but they need a break too, and without a "sand through the hourglass" countdown. They need to decompress from the pressure, need to get out there on the zero-turn and work on their tan, and a vacation from grading papers whilst cooking supper and doing homework with their own kids. So far it I've attempted to support the repeal of the back to the grindstone ticker... my "argument" however is not without at least one flaw. There is an important element that secretly, with just a twinge of guilt, relish the ever diminishing time left for scholastic resumption. The parents--God bless them, their progeny and their patience. Maybe we can flip the well-intentioned counter around. Instead of a countdown to walking "The Green Mile" so to speak, we can count UP the glorious days of summer as they transpire with all of their great memories. Loving summertime still at 60, Guy Gradyville This story was posted on 2015-06-19 05:22:26
