Basketball: Lady Indians 9-0 in summer play

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

The Adair County Lady Indians Basketball team is now sitting at 9-0 in varsity games on their 2025 summer ball season. Recently the team defeated Rye Cove 41-16, Casey County 63-47, and Metcalfe County 45-38.

The win against the Metcalfe County Lady Hornets comes against a team that finished as runner-ups in the 4th Region Tournament last season. Metcalfe only graduated one senior, so that was quite a nice win for the Lady Indians. The leading scorer in that game for Adair County was rising senior Kinzlee Akin with 19, followed by rising sophomore Reese Bardin with 10. Addie Bowman, another rising sophomore, added 10 rebounds and 3 blocks in that game.

In the prior games, the Lady Indians were led in scoring by Reese Bardin against Rye Cove, with 12, and by Kinzlee Akin against Casey County, with 30. In the game against Casey County, Addie Bowman came up just short of a double/double, posting 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Adair County Lady Indians JV team is also having a good summer, winning both games they've played, 51-24 against Somerset Christain and 62-10 versus Spencer County. The Lady Indians will undoubtedly keep improving and get better as they gear up for what should be an excellent 2025-2026 season.

He also designed interpretive displays for Everglades National Park.

The Spring Exhibit is available for viewing from 9amCT to 3pmCT on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, excluding holidays, through July 27, 2025. June 20, 2025 - the longest day of the year

Welcome the summer solstice. Usually when someone complains that it has been a long day, it was a day that felt long. But on June 20, it's more than a figure of speech. It really is the longest day of the year in terms of daylight. It is the day of the summer solstice.

In Chicago, for example, there are more than 15 hours of daylight. In Alaska, the sun drops down to the horizon for about two hours before it chases away the twilight to start the day again.

Legend says it's the day when the sun stands still. That's actually what the word solstice means. It comes from the Latin words sol meaning sun and sistere, meaning to cause to stand still.

Carol Perkins: They come out of the woodwork

Previous Column: A valuable legacy

By Carol Perkins

"They come out of the woodwork." Have you heard that expression referring to family members who never visit Mama or Daddy, or call, and when it comes time to read the will, they are all "in."

I find this to be more common than not, after speaking with many who have been through this painful ordeal. So far, I have had no problems as an executor, but I can see how it happens.

When my mother was in the nursing home, I talked to the residents as I headed for my mother's room. We often engaged in conversations about the weather or something I was wearing. One lady loved my red coat. During my daily visits, I seldom saw a visitor.

Writer Rodney White remembers Adair County Fair

By Rodney White
whiterm55@gmail.com

In all of my years attending horse shows and horse races at the fair during the 1960s and 1970s, the races were by far the most exciting and memorable, and most of the memorable events happened on Saturday, the last day of racing.

One of my favorite memories was when a horse named Roy Freeman ran through the fence on the final turn in the Adair County Derby. He then ran out the entrance gate in the barn area, turned right on Fairground Street, and then made another right turn and headed down Wain Street. Thinking we might help catch the horse, my brother and I gave chase on foot. We ran as far as our house at the corner of Oak Street and Campbellsville Street before we gave out.

Basketball: Indians lose tight games at RCHS

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Monday, June 16, 2025, the Adair County Indians Boys Varsity Basketball team played their latest bit of summer ball action, this time at Russell County High School. The Indians fell in their opener 57-54 to the Warriors of Southwestern, and 75-73 in the second game to the host Russell County Lakers.

In the game against Russell County, the Indians trailed the majority of the game, but took their first lead of the second half 73-72 with under a minute to go. The Lakers unfortunately were able to pull it out, thanks to some free throws with less than a second to go. Lightning danger begins at first sound of thunder

If you are outdoors when you first hear thunder, seek shelter. The best shelter is indoors or in a hard-topped car. The worst shelter is under a tree, by a utility poll or any isolated tall structure. Even standing near a tree is dangerous since lightning travels along the ground surface.

Never wait to take shelter until it starts raining or you hear thunder. By the time it starts to rain, lightning can already be operating up to 10 miles from the rain area. When you hear thunder, the danger is imminent.

Tornado history for this region 1974-2024

In light of the heavy rains and the long stormy spring of 2025, the weather remains at the top of our thoughts. This article collects and categorizes tornado activity over the past 50 years.

By Daniel Wilson, Storm Alert Center

There has been a LOT of discussion concerning the shifting of "tornado alley" to include a large part of Kentucky, mainly along and west of Interstate 75.

I have taken data from 1974 and ran it until 2024. In 1974, the year of the Super Outbreak Tornado of April 3rd, we experienced 59 tornadoes! Three of those tornadoes were F-5 (261-318 MPH), 20 were F-4 (207-260 MPH), 15 were F-3 (158-206 MPH) and only three were EF-1 (73-112 MPH).

This was a rare weather event and it is likely there were more F-0 to F-1 tornadoes that night that were never reported so, that total could be well above 59.

As we continue, there are years when we only had single digit tornado reports.
