Local history: Rev. Spurlock, ACME Recording, Christine, KY By Tex Reddick Another note regarding Rev. Spurlock and ACME Recording Co. I have found another interesting ACME recording, this time being made at ACME Recording Studios, Christine, KY. It is a recording of the Erin Melody Makers (male quartet with piano). I have been informed that Christine, KY is/was where Christine Road meets Highway 206 in Adair County. For anyone researching the Rev. Spurlock and ACME Recording, I would suggest contacting a Mr. Freeman Kitchens in Drake, KY (8/10 miles on the west side of Bowling Green). Freeman is an authority on the Carter Family. A book about the Carter Family has information regarding Rev. Spurlock and ACME Records in it, supplied by Freeman. For anyone interested in old-time country music, it would be worth your time to visit Freeman in his record shop. He was the postmaster in Drake for over 50 years. The Carter family would visit him and bring him records to sell back in the 40's. He is no longer postmaster but the small corner of his shop that was the Post Office is still there. The record racks in his shop came from the famous Randy's Record Shop in Gallatin, TN. If you have ever listened to the PBS radio show "Those Old Scratchy Records\", well, those old scratchy records come from Freeman's record shop in Drake. Give him a visit and ask him about his experiences with the Carter Family. You won't be disappointed. I know I never have been... --Tex Reddick This story was posted on 2015-05-29 06:31:28
