Duane Anderson: The old Marrowbone store run by Graves Bros. That Where in the World Store in Marrowbone, Cumberland Co., KY It was a general store until the 1930s. Later it was used for storage by the Bluegrass Egg Company By Duane Anderson The old store with the carvings in the eaves was the Graves Bros. General Store, owned and operated by Lem and Sammy Graves, who quit the business in the 1930s. The building was later used by Bluegrass Egg Company for storage of supplies, egg crates and the like. The carvings were simply decorative vents. A lot of buildings around here have similar ones. As far as anyone knows, there is no particular meaning in the figures, but, as might be expected, some want to ascribe satanic meaning to them. Lem's son, Preston Graves, still lives in the house next door. Most of us are so thankful that he's allowed it to gracefully age. It is one of the most photographed buildings in Cumberland County's Marrowbone Valley, and that's saying a lot. We're blessed to live in such a picturesque place. There's hardly a week goes by when someone doesn't stop to take a picture of the place. This story was posted on 2015-05-26 13:16:06
