Mike Watson: Significant reason for site of Jane Lampton marker Mike Watson writes: There is a significant reason why the Historical Marker is in this location on the corner of Greensburg Street and the Public Square. The house once on this corner lot, though not on the very corner, built by Benjamin Lampton about 1814 or within the next year or so, was the girlhood home of Jane Lampton and her sister, Martha, daughters of Benjamin Lampton and Peggy Casey. Later, this house and the brick storehouse next door, closer to the Square, were sold and the house, which came to be known as the Pink Cottage, was used for many years as an office for several physicians, including Dr. Nathan Gaither, Dr. Samuel B. Field, and Dr. Melvin Rhorer. The Pink Cottage was removed later and some of the bricks were used in the construction of the house still standing, to the rear of the old Drug Store. There is much history on this corner; Jane Lampton certainly played on the very spot where this marker is located. --Mike WatsonComments re photo 60311 Doug Beard Jane Lampton Markers need better display This story was posted on 2015-05-18 14:32:42
