Kentucky Color - What is it? Flower ID needed The plant is a treasured gift from the late Helen Flatt a few decades ago. It's identity still eludes naturalist Billy Joe Fudge, who asks help from readers. By Billy Joe Fudge Retired District Forester and VP, Homeplace on Green River As I've said in the past, if it is upright, has bark on it and is somewhat native to the Great Wooded South, I'll likely know what it is. This flower which Ms. Helen Flatt gave to me a couple of decades ago has no bark and I need your help. I'm sure she told me the name of the plant along with a very eloquent explanation about who gave it to her, the occasion for which they gave it, why she planted it behind the low rock wall in her back yard and a plethora of additional descriptive flavors, all of which have escaped my recollection. In early bloom, it has a very sweet, pungent fragrance which from afar is quite pleasing. However, should you decide to try a snout-full up close and personal, the gag reflex might very well engage. Trust me, in this particular case more is not better. I believe I might has queried CM's readership about this plant a couple of years ago but received no satisfactory answer. - BJF This story was posted on 2015-05-08 01:42:48
