Travel album: Hailey's triple play

Click headline for story with photos

By Pen

On the way to Charleston, SC, for a spring break trip, three-year-old Hailey Waggener picked three things that she very much wanted to do:
  • Ride on a trolley, "Like Daniel Tiger"
  • Ride in a boat
  • Ride in a horse-drawn carriage, "Like a princess!"
Trolleys run for free between many downtown Charleston destinations, so we hopped on one first thing to get down to the waterfront, and then grabbed a water taxi across the harbor to tour an even bigger boat, the retired aircraft carrier USS Yorktown. Later that afternoon, she got to finish her big day with a carriage tour of the old houses on East Bay Street.

The first leg of Hailey's big day was a ride on one of the charming trolleys to the waterfront in Charleston. Lots of students from the College of Charleston hopped on and off the trolley as we made our way through the historic downtown. The trolleys, really buses outfitted in brass and wood, run frequently through downtown, and are free to ride.

The last leg of Hailey's big day was a carriage tour like this one of old houses and gardens in historic Charleston. This house sits at the corner of Church St. and South Battery, across the street from White Point Garden. Hailey said that the carriage ride was her favorite of all the day's activities.
