Writer addresses letter on vicious dogs to Mike Stephens

About: The animal shelter and vicious dogs
(Exodus 21: 28-29 speaks to animal owner's responsibilities when an animal inflicts injury on humans. - EW)

Personal opinion and commentary of the writer

First off Id like to say I am a dog lover. We have three: a Yorkie, a Shihpoo and a Bassett Hound. My dogs are not vicious.

I'd like to address this to Mike Stephens (Whom I have high respect for):

First off, Mr. Stephens why have we paid thousands of dollars in the first place to care for vicious dogs? And why would anyone want to buy a vicious dog except for dog fights, which are illegal? Why would anyone want to breed these dogs? Their pedigree may be good, but that doesn't make them less vicious. What if a child had been bitten or God forbid killed. If we have thousands of dollars to care for vicious dogs, why not pay that on the hospital bill, instead of the taxpayers paying.

I'm not against all pits, but if they are vicious they certainly don't need to be free.

Dogs that are not biters at the animal shelter are euthanized just because they can only keep them so long. So why has this not already been done? Money talks I guess. My granddaughter was bitten by a dog and required 32 stitches. That dog was immediately put to sleep the next day. The owners voluntarily did it. The man the dogs were trying to attack was a better person than I am because the first time they attacked me would have been their last.

Im sure some will think I'm a mean old lady, and that's OK, because when it comes to dogs attacking people and animals they are right. Thank you for the privledge to address this matter. - Wanda Kerns
