Alicia Bosela of of Iron Weed Native Plant Nursery, Columbia, KY will have native plants for sale to help get your own butterfly waystation started. By Donna Jones, President, Adair County Garden Club Spring is just around the corner, and it won't be long until everyone will be busy with their spring chores, but take time out of your busy schedule to join the Adair County Garden Club for their meeting on March 26, 2015 at 1pmCT, as Linda Porter will be educating us on Monarch Butterflies and how to create a waystation for the butterflies. This meeting will be held at the Adair County Chamber of Commerce Building 201 Burkesville St Columbia, KY. Linda Porter is a long time butterfly gardening enthusiast and educator. She worked for 10 years to establish butterfly and bird habitat gardens in northern Illinois. Since moving back to Kentucky in 2006, Linda has been an active member and officer of the Garden Club of Danville and the Lexington Chapter of Wild Ones, a national native plant landscaping organization. On the State level, she is Special Project Butterfly Chairperson for the Garden Club of Kentucky (GCKY). Linda also chairs the Monarch Waystation Partnership, which draws from the expertise of both GCKY and Wild Ones to educate and inform the public about gardening for Monarchs and other pollinators. She is the winner of the South Atlantic Region Youth Educator Award, and has received State, Regional and National awards for School Pollinator and Butterfly Gardens she designed and planted with children in Boyle County, KY. Creating a Monarch Waystation in your garden When is the last time you saw a Monarch butterfly in your garden, or spotted one fluttering on the side of the road? If you are like many people, you may have to stop and think about the answer. That is because the Monarch butterfly has been disappearing at an alarming rate from Kentucky and other parts of North America. Even the migratory route of this national treasure has been declared "endangered" by the entomologist societies. Learn how you can help protect and bring back the magic of the Monarch butterfly to your garden. Just the addition of one special host plant can make all the difference. This class will cover how to plant, what to plant, and what to add to your gardens to create a certified Monarch Waystation, and an oasis for other butterflies and pollinators! Handouts, gardening tips and garden plans will be provided. Alicia Bosela, owner of Iron Weed Native Plant Nursery located in Columbia, KY will be selling native plants at this meeting to help get your waystation started. Alicia is well known for her knowledge of native plants as well as the beautiful gardens she creates using native plants. Take a break and join the Adair County Garden Club for a great class as we learn each of us can do with native plants to increase the beautiful butterflies.
