MSC Women's Basketball playoffs: LWC 65. Cumberlands 61 Second-seeded Lindsey Wilson Women's Basketball upset by seventh-seeded Cumberlands 65-61 in MSC Quarterfinals at the Frankfort Convention Center, 406 Mero Street, Columbia, KY. Blue Raiders shoot 28.1 percent from the field and lose the rebounding battle 51-36. Lindsey Wilson must now wait to see if they receive an at-large bid into the NAIA Women's Basketball National Championship tournament. By Charles Balcom FRANKFORT, KY - The second-seeded Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team was upset by seventh-seeded Cumberlands, of Williamsburg, KY by a 65-61 margin on Thursday night, March 5, 2015, at the Frankfort Convention Center. Despite forcing 22 turnovers, the Blue Raiders could not overcome a poor shooting performance while losing the rebounding battle 51-36 to the lower-seeded Patriots. No. 18 Lindsey Wilson (21-9) shot 28.1 (18-61) percent from the field, narrowly finishing higher than their season low of 27.8 percent set just three games ago in the loss to Berea (KY). The tone of the night was set early for Lindsey Wilson as the Blue Raiders opened the game hitting just two of their first 14 shots. But despite the struggles Lindsey Wilson put together 11-straight points to take a 17-14 lead with 7:17 to play in the opening half. Cumberlands (13-16) answered with 13-consecutive points of their own to take a 27-17 lead and eventually a 29-22 halftime advantage. The Blue Raiders went over five and a half minutes without a basket during the Patriot run. At the half, Lindsey Wilson shot just 19.4 percent (6-31) from the floor with a 2-for-7 mark from beyond the arc. Cumberlands shot 31.0 percent (9-29) from the field with a 3-for-11 mark from three-point range. The Patriots dominated on the glass in the opening half grabbing 34 rebounds compared to 17 by Lindsey Wilson. The Blue Raiders kept things close by winning the turnover battle 12-2, but had missed opportunities going 8-for-14 from the free throw line. Kayla Richardson had nine points by halftime and Cumberlands' Lydia Cuff already had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The same trends continued in the second half until Cumberlands was able to push their lead to 12 points at 47-35 at the 13:04 mark, their largest lead of the game. Despite everything seeming to go wrong for Lindsey Wilson, the Blue Raiders hung around and were able to cut the lead all the way down to four points at 54-50 after a Chanel Roberts steal and Richardson field goal with 3:53 to play. The Blue Raiders continued to grind away and got it down to a three-point game after a three-point play by Roberts with 24 seconds to play. But Cumberlands' La Teesha DeLoach made three-of-four free throws in the final 22 seconds to put things out of reach as the Blue Raiders ran out of time and the Patriots escaped with the 65-61 upset. Richardson finished with 19 points and Roberts had 16, playing the final 10 minutes of the game with four fouls. Cuff finished with 26 points and 24 rebounds, both career-highs.
