Road Crews Ready to Rumble Against Winter Weather

Crews are ready and salt stores are in good supply

By Wes Watt, Public Information Officer
KY Transportation Officer, District 3, Bowling Green, KY

Bowling Green, KY (4 Mar 2015) - Road crews are prepared for another round of winter weather expected to hit later this evening. Crews have all shifts covered and it will most likely be early tonight before they head out on to the roadways. Forecasters are predicting sleet and significant snow accumulation to roll in late this afternoon following a day full of heavy rain. Anti-icing pretreatment was not an option with this winter storm due to all the rain.

Several predictions showing between 5-10 inches of snow have been forecasted for our district, but a greater threat could be icy conditions as a result of colder temperatures following all the rain. Ice creates a difficult challenge as snow plows have a hard time scraping ice off the roadways, much more so than snow.

Motorists need to check forecasts and road conditions if they have to be out later this evening into tomorrow. If heavy ice forms on the road it will take much longer to remove.

We have priority routes A, B and C with A routes consisting mainly of Interstate 65 and parkways. It is possible we might have to divert other crews to A routes and B routes to keep them open. Also if heavy ice forms it will slow down the clearing of roads significantly. We ask for patience as it could be some time for more rural routes to be plowed.

Crews have spent the days after the last winter storm in late February making equipment repairs and restocking salt supplies. Salt supplies started being delivered immediately following the last winter storm and salt supplies are in good shape.
