CJEStephens/Mr. Thomas: Emergency preparedness underway From Adair County Judge/Executive: "We are in preparedness mode and if the weather events proceed as predicted this could be, once again, a real challenge to the residents of Adair County." Adair County Judge Executive Michael Lee Stephens has announced that after a winter weather briefing with the National Weather Service he is advising the residents of Adair County to expect mostly increasing rain conditions today as we are currently under a flood watch. Judge Stephens said that, for now, heavy rains now and into the afternoon with flooding - which is already occurring, are the biggest threat. In the 6pm-7pmCT time frame, Adair Countians should be prepared for heavy sleet, maybe as much as one-half inch, and then, overnight, as much as 7-8 inches of snow could accumulate. Judge Stephens is urging local residents to stay off roads as much as possible in the next 24 hours. "We checking readiness. We have salt and sufficiient plows and manpower for foreseeable challenges. And he said, "All three road departments (City, Adair County, and Adair County Road crews) are ready for a coordinated effort to keep roads open." There is a possibility he said, that the wet conditions could result in icing on trees and power lines. "A threat to the power grid is possible under these conditions," he said. He urged Adair Countians to look after each other, particularly elderly neighbors. He said we are looking at rain changing over to sleet late this evening with a possible accumulation of ice around 1/2" then changing over to snow with a possible accumulation between 5-8", ending mid-day tomorrow. He said Adair will be experiencing freezing temperatures that will result in record cold lows of around or below zero Friday morning. Adair County should take extra precautions. "We need to be prepared for dangerous road conditions and plan ahead. We are asking that residents remain at home and off the roads, as much as possible. If you have to travel please make sure your gas tanks are full and emergency kits in your vehicles." In his announcement he said we are in "preparedness mode" and if the weather event proceeds as predicted this could be, once again, a real challenge to the residents of Adair County and we ask that you take this weather warning very seriously. His office will update citizens as information becomes available to us. Please contact your magistrate for road clearing requests as they are working with our office and the road department for processing. Please take time to check on all elderly family members, neighbors and all pets and farm animals. The shelter located in the basement of the annex building will remain open and for emergency assistance call 911. The Judge/Executive office telephone number is 270-384-4703.
