LWC baseball tops Lindenwood/Belleville, Faulkner, 28 Feb 2015

Blue Raiders won in extras over the Lynx and followed with a shutout victory over the fifth-ranked Eagles

By Charles Balcom

MONTGOMERY, AL - The Lindsey Wilson baseball team picked up a pair of wins over Lindenwood-Belleville (IL) and No. 5 Faulkner (AL) on Saturday, February 28, at Harrison Field.

The Blue Raiders (7-5) used extra innings to topple the Lynx 6-5 before defeating the host Eagles in the nightcap 4-0 on the strength of the long ball and a stellar pitching performance.

In the first of two seven-inning games, the Blue Raiders took on the Lynx of Lindenwood-Belleville (1-7) in a back-and-forth game that featured five lead changes.

The Lynx took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after a single by Lindenwood-Belleville’s Dylan Skinner. Skinner proved to be a thorn in the Blue Raiders’ side for the majority of the day.

In the top of the second, Lindsey Wilson nearly tied things up, but Ryan Harper was thrown out at home to keep the Lynx ahead. Starting Blue Raider pitcher Carlos Pena found himself in trouble in the bottom half of the inning with runners on second and third and just one out, but a ground out and fly out ended the threat.

Lindsey Wilson was finally able to bring things level in the top of the fourth when Dustin Woody singled home Harper from second to make it 1-1.

The fifth inning saw the largest output of scoring for both teams in the game. Alex Bautista led the inning off with a double and later scored on a Lynx throwing error to give the Blue Raiders their first lead of the day. Brandon Munoz scored later in the inning on an RBI single by Victor Nazario to make it 3-1.

The lead did not last long as Lindenwood-Belleville used a double, triple, and a Blue Raider fielding error to push three runs across in the bottom half of the inning. Lindsey Wilson did prevent the lead from growing any bigger as Aaron Ashton threw out Skinner at the plate on a fielder’s choice to keep the lead to one.

Lindsey Wilson tied things up again in the sixth, taking advantage of a Lynx miscue. Edgar Lebron worked a two-out walk and after stealing second, advanced to third on an error. Steven Paredes later singled Lebron home to make it a 4-4 game.

In the top of the seventh, pinch hitter Kory Weeks delivered an RBI single to put the Blue Raiders on top 5-4 in the final inning.

Lindenwood-Belleville nearly stole the game away in a walk-off effort in the bottom half of the frame.

The Lynx had the bases loaded with just one out after a single and a pair of walks. Skinner then roped a single to left field that scored the runner from third. Hayden Stevens attempted to score the game-winning run from second, but he was thrown out 7-5-2 at the plate to keep the game tied 5-5. A passed ball put runners on second and third but a fly out ended the inning, sending the game into extras.

After Bautista singled and advanced to second on a groundout in the top of the eighth, Nazario delivered again with a two-out single that scored Bautista and put the Blue Raiders back ahead 6-5 heading for the bottom of the eighth.

In the bottom of the inning, James Roll entered to pitch after a leadoff single. Roll proceeded to retire his only three batters with a pair of pop outs and a ground out to preserve the 6-5 win.

Sam Ross (1-1) picked up his first win of the season in relief going two and two-thirds innings allowing one earned run on three hits. Roll picked up his first career save as a Blue Raider needing just eight pitches to retire the three batters he faced. Lindenwood-Belleville’s Cody Calhoun (0-2) suffered the loss giving up two earned runs on six hits in his three innings of work.

Bautista went 4-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, including the go-ahead in the eighth. Skinner went 3-for-4 with four RBIs for the Lynx.

Lindsey Wilson finished with 14 hits in the game, but left 12 runners on while the Lynx scored five runs on seven hits and left seven runners on.

In the nightcap, the Blue Raiders were able to use the long ball and an Eagle miscue, accompanied by a complete-game shutout pitching performance by Ryan Hartman to hand Faulkner (16-2) just their second loss of the season.

Lindsey Wilson wasted little time getting things going offensively as Bautista smacked a solo shot to left field on a full count to put the Blue Raiders ahead 1-0 in the first. Weeks followed suit in the top of the second with a solo home run of his own to double the lead at 2-0.

A third inning throwing error proved to be costly for the Eagles. Lebron reached on a single and proceeded to steal both second and third base. Bautista followed with a walk and later stole second during which the throwing error occurred that allowed both Lebron and Bautista to score and make it a 4-0 game.

The Blue Raider offense sputtered from there, but the strength of Hartman’s pitching and the Lindsey Wilson defense helped carry the team to victory.

The junior lefthander retired 18 of the first 22 batters he faced, 13 via the strikeout. Hartman allowed just six hits while finishing with 15 strikeouts as he improved to 3-0 on the season. He did find himself in trouble in the bottom of the seventh after a pair of singles and a walk, his lone walk issued during the game, loaded the bases. But Hartman was able to induce a ground out to end the game and finish the complete-game shutout victory. It marks just the second time all season the Eagles have been shutout.

Christian Torres (0-1) took the loss for the Eagles going six and a third innings giving up two earned runs on three hits with seven strikeouts.

Faulkner managed six hits in the game but left seven runners on base. Edgar Figueroa did the most damage at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance, all singles.
