Salato Center reopens for its 20th anniversary on March 3, 2015 By Laurie Davison FRANKFORT, Ky. - The Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort shakes off hibernation and reopens for its 20th year March 3. The center has added two new additions to its collection: a groundhog and a kestrel. These animals will be on display occasionally, and during program events. The kestrel, which is also known as a sparrow hawk, is actually the smallest falcon found in North America. While the kestrel is the smallest falcon, the groundhog is one of Kentucky's largest rodents. The staff at Salato has worked with both during the past year in preparation for programs at the center. Visitors can get an up close and personal look at Salato's newest additions, as well as a look at some other animals during its Meet a Critter event being held from 11 a.m. until noon (Eastern time) March 7. Other events on the Salato calendar include a nature crafts workshop for visitors from 2-3 p.m. (Eastern) March 14; Serpent Saturday April 11; and the annual Earth Day celebration April 25. The Salato Center is operated by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. The center is located off U.S. 60, approximately 1.5 miles west of the U.S. 127 intersection at 1 Sportsman's Lane. Look for the bronze deer statue at the entrance of the main Kentucky Fish and Wildlife campus. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Eastern) Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Eastern) Saturday. Salato is closed on Sundays, Mondays and state holidays. For more information, contact the center at (502) 564-7863 or 1-800-858-1549. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for youth 5 to 18.
