LWC Wrestlers MSC Champions with win over St. Catharine The Blue Raiders jumped out to a 27-0 lead to start the dual, winning six-straight matches, end night with 36-10 victory at Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive, Columbia, KY. By Charles Balcom News from Lindsey Wilson College COLUMBIA, KY - The Lindsey Wilson College wrestling team captured the Mid-South Conference title with a 36-10 win over St. Catharine (KY) on Tuesday night, February 10, 2015 at Biggers Sports Center. The No. 12-ranked Blue Raiders finish the regular season with a 13-7 overall dual record, including a perfect 5-0 mark in the MSC St. Catharine, who is receiving votes in the national poll, falls to 2-15 on the year and 0-5 in the Mid-South in their first season as a collegiate wrestling program. It was all Lindsey Wilson early as the Blue Raiders won the opening six matches to build a 27-0 lead, clinching the dual and the MSC title by the 165-pound weight class. James Flint (ranked No. 8 at 125 pounds) got Lindsey Wilson off to a fast start, recording a 16-4 major decision over Andrew Lenz to build a 4-0 lead. Felix Casa del Valle then built up a 7-0 lead at 133 pounds before finally pinning David Hernandez in four minutes and 26 seconds to make it 10-0. Paul Longshore got in on the high-scoring action using takedowns and near falls to rack up the points towards an 18-2 technical fall over Tyler McCoy at 141 pounds to push the lead to 15-0. A forfeit at the 149 pound class gave Lindsey Wilson a 21-0 advantage. In a fast-paced match at 157 pounds, Joe Cozart (No. 1 at 157) was able to outlast Mike Clark with an 11-7 decision using multiple takedowns to build his lead. Rhodes Bell took on Mitch Rusch at 165 pounds and Bell worked his way to a 9-5 decision, mathematically sealing the victory for the Blue Raiders being up 27-0 with four matches still to go. The shutout was broken up at 174 pounds when St. Catharine's Bernard Ray took a 15-4 major decision over Lofton Wright. Wright was able to fight off multiple pin attempts by Ray, but Ray was also able to turn away takedown and escape attempts by Wright to hold on for the major decision. Lindsey Wilson got back to the winning ways at 184 pounds when Michael Pixley dominated Joey Garcia by pinning him at the one minute mark. The Patriots got their final points of the night at 197 pounds when BJ Carman, the lone ranked man on the St. Catharine squad (No. 13 at 197), was able to pin Elliott Porter in two minutes and 39 seconds. The two grapplers battled back and forth, but Carman was finally able to get the upper hand on Porter for the pin, making the score 33-10. In the final match of the evening, Ameer Daniels took on Garrett Harding at the heavyweight class. Both men were unable to score points in the opening three-minute period, and each grappler secured an escape from their respective down positions during the second and third periods as the match went to overtime tied 1-1. In the opening one minute overtime period, Daniels nearly secured a takedown, but Harding was able to avoid it and stay upright, sending the match into the top-bottom periods. Daniels started down in the first of the two 30 second periods and was able to secure an escape with less than five seconds remaining to take a one-point lead. Harding nearly escaped during his down position but Daniels was able to hold his grip and secure a better top position to take the match TB-1 2-1 and give the Blue Raiders the 36-10 victory. Lindsey Wilson concludes the regular season with nine-consecutive dual victories, including a 10-1 dual record against NAIA institutions. The lone loss coming to three-time defending national champion Grand View (Iowa). Prior to the match, five seniors, Cozart, Isaac Thomas, Erick Gomez, Aaron Back and Thomas Buckman, were honored for their contributions to the wrestling program. Cozart and Jameel Bryant were presented with their 2014 NAIA National Championships rings before the match as well. This story was posted on 2015-02-11 03:05:35
