By Chris Megginson News from Campbellsville University CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - Sixth-ranked Campbellsville pulled away in the second half Saturday to beat Cumberland University, 70-50, in Powell Athletic Center, and hold on to its share of first-place in the Mid-South Conference. Campbellsville (22-3, 9-2 MSC) took a 7-1 lead to start the game off a pair of Elliott Young 3s, but the Bulldogs later put together a 7-0 run to gain their first lead, 19-18. Darius Clement hit a pair of free throws to reclaim the lead, 22-21, but Cumberland's Marquel Hickerson scored the last five points of the half to give the Bulldogs a 27-24 lead at the break. Both teams struggled shooting in the first half, shooting below 35 percent from the floor and 22 percent from beyond the arc. The Tigers improved their shooting in the second half from 30.8 in the first 20 minutes to 53 percent, hitting 17-of-32 in the second half. D'Von Campbell hit an early 3 in the second half to regain the Tigers' lead, 29-27. Cumberland evened the score at 29, but Campbellsville responded with an 11-0 run to go up by double-digits for the first time, 40-29. During the run, Miles Rice flew to the basket to slam home an alley-oop pass from Campbell to give the Tigers their largest lead at the time at 38-29. Campbell and Damontre Harris took control of the Tigers' offense in the second half, combining for 23 points in the second half. Nineteen of those points were all of Campbellsville's points from the 14 minute to five minute mark before Young hit a 3 to make it 60-47. Campbellsville out-scored the Bulldogs 15-3 in the final five minutes and 29 seconds to pull away. Campbell finished with 26 points in the game, his second-highest scoring performance of the season and most in a regulation game after scoring 33 in double overtime at Philander-Smith in December. He also had eight rebounds and five assists. Harris followed Campbell with 16 points and 10 rebounds for his 14th double-double of the season. Young narrowly missed his third double-double of the year, finishing with 14 points and nine boards. Uros Benacek and Telvin Wilkerson led Cumberland with 15 and 11 points, respectively.
