COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 12-ranked Lindsey Wilson College wrestling team defeated No. 6 Indiana Tech and No. 11 Life (Ga.) in a pair of dual matches on Friday night at Biggers Sports Center.

The Blue Raiders (12-7, 4-0 MSC) put forth a strong showing winning 31-6 over Indiana Tech and 29-6 over Life, losing just four matches total on the night.

By defeating Life (10-2, 4-1 MSC), Lindsey Wilson secured at least a share of the Mid-South Conference title and can clinch the outright title with a win over St. Catharine (KY) on Tuesday night.

In the first match of the evening for Lindsey Wilson, the Blue Raiders found themselves in a 3-0 deficit to Indiana Tech (18-9) after the opening weight class.

James Flint (ranked No. 8 at 125 pounds) battled Kris McKinley out of the gate and Flint had issues getting to the Indiana Tech man as McKinley had excellent takedown defense, turning Flint’s low diving shots at the legs away, one after another.

A takedown by McKinley proved to be the decisive point as he was able to hold and defeat Flint 3-2, putting the Warriors ahead 3-0.

The 133 pound match saw Keaton Thomas (No. 10 at 133) take on Brett Yarbrough (No. 9 at 133). Although the individual rankings were similar, Thomas proved to have the upper hand as he controlled things from the start. He scored using takedowns to build his lead and eventually secured the 7-1 victory to knot the match up at 3-3.

At 141 pounds, Daniel Leonard (No. 16 at 141) faced off against Bobby Humphrey (No. 12 at 141). The match began slow as Leonard was only able to secure a 2-0 lead through the opening period. But then the freshman cranked it into high gear and starting racking up takedowns and near falls before eventually forcing the match to an early end by securing an 18-2 technical fall just seconds before the final buzzer, putting the Blue Raiders up 8-3.

Isaac Thomas and Joe Cozart (No. 1 at 157) both added to the Lindsey Wilson lead in their respective weight classes. Thomas provided a solid showing in his 7-2 upset win over Thomas Garty (No. 6 at 149), and Cozart flexed his offensive muscle racking up a 16-4 major decision over Mitch Roadruck to put the Blue Raiders up 15-3.

Rhodes Bell suffered the second Lindsey Wilson loss of the evening, falling in a hard fought match to Jacob Johnson (No. 8 at 165) 5-1 to cut into the lead at 15-6. The victory would be the last time the Warriors scored in the dual as the Blue Raiders took the final four matches by a 16-0 margin.

Erick Gomez (No. 7 at 174) and Tyler Goldman both showed off their athleticism in the match at 174 pounds, but Gomez ultimately captured an 8-3 decision win.

Michael Pixley met LJ Grayson (No. 6 at 184) and had a chance to put things out of reach for the Blue Raiders and that’s exactly what he did, securing crucial takedowns and holding off Grayson for the 7-4 decision win to make it 21-6 with just two weight classes to go.

Jake Maupin got the best of Brandon Sunday at 197 pounds by winning with an 11-2 major decision and Chico Adams (No. 13 at 285) sealed the convincing Blue Raider win by pinning Kegan Clark-Sanchez in the second period at the 3:45 mark of the match for the 31-6 victory.

In the final match of the evening, the Blue Raiders and Running Eagles battled with the MSC title on the line.

At the 125 pound match, Flint and Devane Dodgens were stalemated after the first period at 0-0. Each grappler only managed an escape in the second and third periods, sending the match into overtime. Dodgens also had excellent takedown defense, turning away Flint’s diving attempts. Dodgens was finally able to secure a takedown on Flint in the first overtime period to secure the SV-1 3-1 victory and put the Blue Raiders down 3-0 once again at the start of the match.

Keaton Thomas quickly gave the Blue Raiders the lead after putting forth an impressive performance in his 21-7 major decision victory over Timothy Britt at 133 pounds to give Lindsey Wilson the 4-3 advantage.

Leonard added another three points at 141 pounds with a 7-2 win over Dillan Schouw to make it 7-3.

Points were at a premium in the 149 pound match as Isaac Thomas and Dallas Brown were tied 0-0 after the first period. Each grappler used an escape in the second and third periods to make it 1-1. As the match appeared to be heading to overtime, Thomas shot on Brown and was able to secure his legs for the takedown with just five seconds remaining before the buzzer to steal the 3-1 decision victory.

Cozart tallied another strong performance with his second major decision of the evening at 157 pounds, this time bettering Rowdy Prior by a 14-4 mark to make it 14-3 overall.

Bell met his second top 10 wrestler of the evening in Oliver Brukardt (No. 5 at 165) and once again kept things close, but Brukardt was able to contain Bell’s escape and reversal attempts to win 4-2.

Gomez got Lindsey Wilson back to the winning ways with a 4-0 shutout of Anthony Codella at 174 pounds to make it 17-6.

The most intense match of the evening came in the 184 pound class as Pixley took on Dalton Bailey (No. 11 at 184). Bailey jumped ahead early and built a 6-0 advantage over the freshman from Blue Springs, Missouri. But Pixley used his strength to answer with a six-point run of his own to tie things up at 6-6 heading into the third and decisive period. Pixley began in the down position in the third period and quickly reversed to take an 8-6 advantage. Then Bailey reversed to notch things up again at 8-8. Pixley reversed yet again only to have Bailey reverse right back at tie the match at 10-10. The string of reverses was broken by Pixley as he managed an escape, followed by a takedown to take a 13-10 lead. As Bailey held the riding time advantage, he took down Pixley with under 15 seconds to go to make it 13-12 with just seconds left on the clock. But Pixley was able to muster one final escape with four seconds left and go up 14-12 and secure the 14-13 win after Bailey received his one point from the riding time advantage.

By the end of the chaos, Pixley had kept his unbeaten record intact and helped the Blue Raiders mathematically secure the win being up 20-6 with two classes to go.

Maupin shined at 197 pounds as he built a quick lead over Jacob Dempsey (No. 10 at 197) before pinning his opponent in two minutes and nine seconds for the upset win.

Adams completed the Blue Raiders second win of the night as he upset Tracy Jewett (No. 4 at 285) by a 6-2 mark to give Lindsey Wilson the 29-6 victory.

Earlier in the night, Indiana Tech defeated Life 22-18 in the opening match of the tri-dual.
