Reade Heskamp: Memories of the Coburg Store Remembers 30 people listening on radio on porch of the Coburg Store when Joe Louis knocked out that German Guy (Max Schmeling on June 22, 1938, according to Wikipedia Entry, "Joe Louis" Comments re photo 58540 Favorite Old Photo, Larry Smith collection Old Coburg Store ca 1940s By Reade Heskamp "I spent my summers in that store. It was the civic center of Coburg. One thing I remember specifically: we were all, about thirty of us, standing on the porch listening to Joe Louis knock out that German guy on the radio. It was a return match, and Joe just stomped him. You could do anything in that store - it had everything. You could get a penny's worth of candy, food, clothing, anything - and it was also the post office. It was owned by Gene Biggs who later sold it to Otley. Our farm is right behind the store in this picture, the first house down the lane on the left. You can see one of our barns on the right-hand side of the picture. Of course, the store was only one of a handful of businesses that used to be along the road (most owned by my granddad). Miss Annie Whitney lived on the north side and Eddie and Ethel Scott lived across the road. I could go on and on about the store. In fact, I have a brick from when the store was torn down."--Reade Heskamp Footnote: I have been writing down my dad's thoughts, but I want to add that "Otley's store" has always been one of the touchstone stories about his young life. I visited it once, back in the 60s, and have always had a fondness for it. When Dad saw this picture it just made his day, and we printed off a copy of it for him. Thank you for posting it!
