By Chris Megginson

KANSAS CITY, MO - Campbellsville University men's basketball is the No. 1 team in the nation for the first time ever, the NAIA announced Tuesday, January 6, 2015.

The Tigers (16-1) received five first-place votes and edged undefeated Hope International University (13-0) by one point, 246-245, in the second regular season NAIA DI Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll. Previous No. 1 Cal State San Marcos (17-2) fell to No. 3.

"It's a nice honor. I've said a million times that ratings this time of year don't mean a whole lot but to say it doesn't mean something to me would be lying," CU head coach Keith Adkins said.

"It's a challenge to get to the point to be considered the No. 1 team in the country at that moment, but the bigger challenge is to stay there. There's a lot of pressure that will come with that ranking. At No. 2 we got everybody's best shot, and at No. 1 you're even more of a target ... I appreciate the consideration of the raters and everyone who had an input in this. I'm proud of our guys that through 17 games in a season we've done this well."

CU's historic rise to the top began with a preseason No. 19 ranking and a leap to No. 2 for the first regular season ranking on December 9, 2014. Since the last poll, The Tigers are 4-0 with wins over Ohio Christian University, ranked No. 1 in NCCAA DII, then No. 17 Philander Smith College, John Brown, which was receiving votes in the last poll, and MidAmerica Nazarene University, which was a 2014 NAIA DI Fab Four team.

This is the first time since 2006-07 the Tigers have been ranked in the Top 5 in back-to-back. CU was ranked No. 4 in three consecutive polls in January 2007 by starting the season 17-1. The No. 1 men's basketball ranking is only the third time in the university's history a sport has claimed the NAIA No. 1 ranking, with men's wrestling doing so in the fall of 2007 and 2011.

Campbellsville University also once again has both its men's and women's teams ranked in the Top 5 for the second consecutive poll - a feat previous unaccomplished in the school's history until December 9, 2014. The Lady Tigers (16-1) are ranked No. 3 in the latest NAIA DI Women's Basketball Poll.

The Tigers lead the Mid-South Conference at 5-0, including wins over preseason No. 2 Pikeville and preseason No. 25 University of the Cumberlands. Pikeville, whose only loss is to CU, remained No. 4 in the latest poll. Georgetown College dropped four sports to No. 19, while Life University and Cumberlands are receiving votes. The MSC is the only conference to boast two NAIA Top 5 teams.

During its non-conference schedule, Campbellsville recorded only one loss at then No. 4 Benedictine College on the road November 15, 2014. The Tigers also recorded wins over preseason-ranked No. 4 Benedictine and No. 20 Evangel during the first month of action, as well as wins over NAIA DII preseason Top 25 teams Robert Morris (Ill.) and St. Thomas (Fla.)

. "We've worked very hard, and the ratings are a reward for how well you've done to that point of the season. We've challenged ourselves with a very good schedule. We've gone through five conference games, with a few good ones on the road, and we've done pretty well so far," Adkins said.News from Campbellsville University
