FRANKFORT, KY - The Kentucky State Parks Foundation recently awarded matching grants to two Kentucky State Parks and a rail trail it manages.

A grant of $3,354 was awarded to Barren River Lake State Resort Park in Barren County to help the park use technology to promote nature education to visiting groups that include school students and senior citizens.

The grant will be used to build a butterfly garden, purchase GPS units for geocaching and provide more information on nature trails through cell phones.

Old Mulkey Meeting House State Historic Site at Tompkinsville received a grant of $388 to help purchase portable wheelchair ramps to make the site more accessible.

The Dawkins Line Rail Trail, which is managed by the state parks, received a grant of $250 to help the trail’s friends group file for tax-exempt status. The trail currently covers 18 miles in Johnson and Magoffin counties.

The Kentucky State Parks Foundation was created in 2007 as a nonprofit foundation to support, enhance, advocate for and connect people to the natural, historical and cultural resources of Kentucky’s 49 state parks.
