LWC climbs to second in Learfield Cup standings

COLUMBIA, KY - Lindsey Wilson athletics moved up one spot to second in the final Learfield Sports Director's Cup fall standings, National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics officials announced on Wednesday, December 23, 2014.



Lindsey Wilson closes out the fall with 277 points -- its best-ever showing in the fall. Four Blue Raider teams earned top-10 finishes at NAIA national championships.

The final fall ranking includes football, joining men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer and volleyball from the previous ranking.

The Blue Raider football team earned 60 points towards Lindsey Wilson's total thanks to its tie for fifth in the Football Championship Series.

The Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team scored the most points this fall, tallying 100 points for winning the NAIA national championship. Volleyball earned 64 points for a ninth-place finish and men's soccer posted 53 points for its ninth-place finish.

Southern Oregon sits atop the standings with 297 points. Southern Oregon also scored in four sports -- 100 points for winning the football national title, 90 points for a second in men's cross country, 56 for an 18th place finish in women's cross country and 51 points for a 13th place finish in volleyball.

Cal State San Marcos is a distant third with 222 points and Olivet Nazarene's (Ill.) is fourth with 218.5 points.

Four other Mid-South Conference teams are in the rankings.

One hundred and eight schools scored points during the fall championships.

With the conclusion of the six fall NAIA championships, the following institutions captured national titles: Oklahoma City (men's cross country); British Columbia (women's cross country); Southern Oregon (football); Lindsey Wilson (women's soccer); Davenport (MI (men's soccer); and Park (MO) (volleyball). The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between NACDA and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 12 sports -- six women's and six men's.
