Brower: Kentucky license plates more exciting than PA's

But old ones would make cool license plate birdhouses

By Jackson Brower
Pennsyltuckian

Those license plate birdhouses are really cool. I've got a lot of birdfeeders in my backyard, and there is a rumor that Santa is bringing me more. That Kentucky plate looks pretty good on Ron Owen's feeder, plus the wishbone-shaped tree branch perch is a nice touch.

If I made one, I'd have to go to the junkyard to get an old Pennsylvania plate. They are blue and gold, but they are kind of lame-looking compared to Kentucky's. I like the blue letters on a white background and the race horse emblem with "Unbridled Spirit" under it. That's a pretty good slogan!

Ours are "www.pa.state.us", not very exciting. Pennsylvania had one back in the '80s: "You've Got a Friend in Pennsylvania," which was grammatically incorrect. An English teacher wrote a letter to Governor Casey to that effect, so they started phasing them out. George Carlin's take on it was: "Well, there are about 18 million people in Pennsylvania. You think you\'d have at least one friend!" --Jackson Brower
