LW Wrestling goes 2-3 against NCAA Division II opponents

Newberry Duels: Blue Raiders defeated Anderson and Belmont Abbey; fall to Coker, Limestone and Newberry

By Charles Balcom

NEWBERRY, SC - The Lindsey Wilson wrestling team posted a 2-3 record in five dual meets at the Newberry Duals on Saturday at the Eleazer Arena.

The Blue Raiders, taking on five NCAA Division II institutions, defeated Anderson (SC) and Belmont Abbey (NC), but fell to Coker (SC), Limestone (SC) and Newberry (SC) at the duals.

Lindsey Wilson (2-6) opened the day with a 31-18 win over Anderson. Through the first seven weight classes, Anderson held a slim 18-16 lead over the Blue Raiders. But an Erick Gomez pin at 184 pounds gave Lindsey Wilson the lead, and a Jake Maupin decision at 197 and pin by Chico Adams at 285 helped the Blue Raiders seal the win in their first outing.

James Flint and Daniel Leonard both recorded technical fall victories and Court Mace added a pin at the 165-pound weight class in the dual.

The second dual saw the Blue Raiders suffer a 37-6 defeat at the hands of Coker. Flint got Lindsey Wilson out to a 3-0 lead with a 6-1 decision at 125 pounds, but the Blue Raiders would fall in the next eight matches. Three LWC grapplers suffered pins in that stretch. In the final weight class, Adams was able to pull off an overtime victory over Alex Green to add three more points to the Blue Raider total.

Lindsey Wilson got back to the winning ways in their third dual, defeating Belmont Abbey by a 25-21 mark. The Blue Raiders jumped out to a 15-0 lead thanks to a decision win by Felix Casa del Valle and a pair of pins by Flint and Leonard.

Belmont Abbey responded with four-straight victories to take an 18-15 lead with three weight classes remaining. Gomez came up with a huge pin at 184 pounds to retake the lead at 21-18, and Maupin mathematically sealed the win with an 11-1 major decision at 197 pounds. Adams fell in the final match at 285, but the Blue Raiders secured the 25-21 victory.

In the fourth dual meet of the day, Lindsey Wilson built an early 9-4 lead through four matches against Limestone, Flint, Leonard and Paul Longshore all with decision wins. Limestone answered by taking the next four matches, mathematically taking the win with a 22-9 lead. But the Blue Raiders wrestled strong in the final two matches, Maupin winning with a 9-1 major decision and Adams winning with a 2-1 decision to make it 22-16 in favor of Limestone.

The final meet of the day saw host Newberry, who ranks No. 19 in NCAA Division II, shut out the Blue Raiders by a 43-0 margin. Flint suffered his first loss of the day at 125 pounds, a tight 8-5 decision. Adams also fell in a tightly contested match at 285 pounds, suffering a 3-2 loss to end the duals.

The host Wolves steamrolled the competition on the day, defeating their four opponents by a 205-3 point margin. Lindsey Wilson held Newberry to their lowest scoring output of the day at 43.
