Click on headline for story with photo(s). If you go Grimsley's Jewelry, 108 Public Square, Glasgow, KY, is 37 miles, 35 minutes, from Grimsley's Jewelry, 102 Public Square, Columbia, KY, via the Louie B. Nunn Parkway.

By Ed Waggener

In 1952 the late Pleas Grimsley opened a tiny boutique jewelry store and repair service in the Adair Hotel, with three access points; 1) Through the Hotel Barber Shop, or 2) Through the main hotel lobby, or 3) Entering the hallway from the Greensburg Side, taking a right at the hallway 'T' and entering the main door of the room Charles Grimsley recalls as having been "about 10 x 10."

Little did anyone dream, at the time, that little store would grow into what it is today. This morning, at 9amCT, Mr. Grimsley son, Charles, and daughter-in-law, Holly Grimsley, are having the Grand Opening of the company's second store, on the Public Square in Glasgow, KY,which is a virtual clone of couple's successful Downtown Business at 102 Public Square, Columbia, KY.

Both stores specialize in Fossil watches, repairs and service, a full line of jewelry, and will buy scrap gold and silver. But there will be slight differences. The Columbia store has become a mini-Adair County museum, and has an excellent selection of Adair County books. The Glasgow store will have a broader line of University of Kentucky Wildcat merchandise.

That first little store grew, in large part because Mr. Ples Grimsley built a reputation for reliability, fairness, and honesty. There was always an ample inventory of jewelry - with added items at Christmas time, Valentine's Day, Graduations and in bridal season.

In time, the store outgrew the 10 x 10 shop and moved to what is now the Bault Building, the site of Bonnie & Allison's Beauty Salon, and remained there for seven years. With the frontage on the Square, Mr. Grimsley's growing reputation as a watchmaker, and his careful selection of jewelry, the business outgrew that location after a 20 year tenure.

In 1979, 102 Public Square building became available. The glass brick front building had been remodeled by Paul Marshall for his Marshall's 5 & 10 Variety Store. For a time after Marshall's ceased operation, the store was a dress shop operated by first Christine Morgan, and later, by Louise Hutchison.

Ironically, that location had been the site of Slinker's Jewelry in the 1940s - and, coincidentally, Mr. (?) Slinker relocated to a S. Public Square in Glasgow, a baseball throw away from Grimsley's new Glasgow location, but not till after he had romanced one of Columbia's Beauties and married her. "I don't remember name," Charles said. But I do remember Mr. Slinker said his eyes followed her after she left a watch to be repaired. He said she had an unforgettable wiggle and he was smitten. Mr. Slinker said he'd delayed having the repair done until she had visited a few times, they got to know each other, and he managed to arrange a date with her." The rest is Slinker family history, he said.

The Grimsley family business has been operated for the past 35 years by Mr. Ples Grimsley and now his son, Charles Grimsley, in its present location. A testimony to Charles Grimsley stature in the community has been the outstanding vote totals he accumulates each time he has run for Columbia City Council. In the November 4, 2014 race, he was easily the top vote getter.

On October 2, 2013, a stoybook wedding took place a the Columbia Baptist Church when Charles and Holly Edwards exchanged wedding vows at the Columbia Baptist Church.

Holly Grimsley will be the manager of the Glasgow store. Charles will continue as the watchmaker for both stores and will mange the Columbia operations.

Today, Becky Moseley Bragg, now retired after a career as a school teacher in Bowling Green, will be helping the Grimsleys with the Glasgow Opening.

Holly Grimsley said that she and Charles are delighted to be in Glasgow, but assured folks back in Adair County, that Columbia will always be their home.
