Remembering, from Best of Senior Quest: Jimmy Robertson Metcalfe County native Jimmy Robertson passed away on Nov. 22, 2014 (Obituary). The following article is reproduced from the book The Best of Senior Quest, published in 2009 and available online in print or ebook form. By Geniece Marcum Jimmy Robertson has long been known as a top-notch bricklayer by trade, but not too many people know that he also enjoys making musical instruments as a side line. Being a talented musician himself, Jimmy has played just about every kind of musical instrument he has ever seen. So it was probably only natural about ten years ago when he found himself looking around for a good mandolin and a hobby at the same time, that he decided to put both talent and a new hobby together and just make his own. When the task was finally finished, the result of his labors was so rewarding pretty soon Jimmy started right in making another mandolin. He was hooked. By today he says he has lost count of how many of these instruments he has made for friends who liked the looks and especially the sound of his instruments. He has also made more than a dozen guitars and half as many violins. All sold to apparently happy customers. Jimmy says he is often told that his instruments sound as good as the Gibson. "Several years ago," Jimmy says, "a feller' asked me how I ever got started in such a business." I told him, "I just went out in the woods one day and cut down the first saplin' I saw. Then I took my ax and chopped off everything about it that didn't look like a mandolin." We had our doubts that the process was all that simple but we'll take Jimmy's word for it. Jimmy and his wife Betty have one son, Steve, and several grandchildren. Grandson Chris, lead vocalist/guitarist for the Metcalfe County based rock group Black Stone Cherry, is currently on tour in Europe. Chris joined the group seven or more years ago, along with John Fred Young. John Fred is the son of Richard (Kentucky Headhunters) and Cindy Young and the grandson of James Howard and Gwen Young. Chris and John Fred along with band members Ben Wells and Jon Lawhon have made quite a name for themselves in the music industry and have a loyal global following. Another of the Robertson's grandsons, Tyler, is part of an up and coming young group called Casting Shadows. This story was posted on 2014-11-24 09:45:10
