LW Football advances to FCS Quarterfinals; beats Faulkner 20-17 Blue Raiders advanced to NAIA Football Quarterfinals with the win today, Sat 22 Nov 2014 before hometown crowd of 1,807 at Blue Raider Stadium, 928 Russell Road, Columbia, KY. They will learn its opponent on Sun 23 Nov 2014. The Blue Raiders will more than likely be on the road next Sat 29 November for the quarterfinal game. The Blue Raiders extend their winning streak to a program-best seven straight and earn the program's first-ever 10-win season with the victory. CM SPORTS SECTION - Quick Links to the 200 latest sports stories By Chris Wells News from Lindsey Wilson College COLUMBIA, KY - Josh Haney's fourth-quarter, 45-yard touchdown run proved to be the game-winner as No. 6-ranked Lindsey Wilson (KY) football defeated visiting Faulkner (AL) 20-17 today at Blue Raider Stadium. Haney broke free from a crowded line of scrimmage into the open field and made one man miss en route to the end zone to give the Blue Raiders at 20-9 lead with 4:25 left in regulation. Haney finished with 108 rushing yards on 11 carries and the score on his way to earning Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the Game. Faulkner -- who had been held scoreless for more than 27 game minutes -- struck back with a four-play, 98-yard drive to cut the Lindsey Wilson lead to 20-17 with 3:12 left. A pair of Lindsey Wilson first downs secured the Blue Raider win -- a first for a Football Championship Series newcomer since 2010. Lindsey Wilson (10-2) advances to the FCS quarterfinals with the win and will learn its opponent on Sunday. The Blue Raiders will more than likely be on the road next Saturday for the quarterfinal game. Faulkner's season ends at 9-3. Faulkner dented the scoreboard first as the Eagles marched 14 plays and 50 yards on their opening drive to set up a Hunter Kennamer 40-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead. The Blue Raiders responded with a three-play, 78-yard drive on their first chance on offense to take a 7-3 lead. Facing a third and 12 from the Lindsey Wilson 20-yard line, Branden Cresap hit Chaz Barnes in stride for an 80-yard touchdown and the lead. The scoring play was the second longest pass play in Lindsey Wilson football history. While the first two drives produced points for each team, the two defenses quickly seized the momentum from the respective offenses. Both teams were forced to punt on their next two possessions. Faulkner ended the scoring drought as the Eagles dove into their bag of tricks. Mete Buckner took a pitch from Eagle quarterback David Cochran and tossed a 17-yard touchdown to Jazeric Peterson for a 13-7 lead. Peterson caught the halfback pass at the six-yard line and pin-balled off a pair of Lindsey Wilson defenders and won a sprint to the front-left pylon to give the Eagles the lead. Faulkner missed the extra point to keep the game at 13-7. Lindsey Wilson -- who led the NAIA with 41 takeaways entering today's game -- forced the first of three Faulkner turnovers at the end of its next series. After the Eagle defense forced a punt, Faulkner's Simon Smiley muffed the punt and Lou Alexander recovered the fumble give the Blue Raiders the ball on the Faulkner 22-yard line. Lindsey Wilson needed seven plays to cover the 22 yards -- capped off with Branden Cresap's touchdown toss to Cortez Barber for a 13-9 lead. Cresap finished the game 16-of-36 for 199 yards and two touchdowns. Barber caught a team-high four balls for 30 yards and his 10th receiving touchdown of the season. The Blue Raiders missed the extra-point try and ultimately carried a 13-9 lead into intermission. The two teams exchange stellar defensive plays throughout the third quarter and into the fourth period. Lindsey Wilson's Austin Howell -- the Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the Game - picked off Cochran twice in the game, including once during the scoreless third quarter. Marte Sears and Keylan Smith added interceptions for the Eagles in the third period. Smith's picked came in the end zone when the Blue Raiders threatened to extend their lead. The two teams combined for seven punts after the break. Lindsey Wilson finally ended the scoring drought with the Haney run. Haney becomes the 11th Blue Raider all-time to run for 100 yards in a game and the first this season. The touchdown is his ninth of the season. Faulkner used a second unorthodox play in the game to cut the deficit to three points. Cochran started the play with a pass to Keithon Redding who lateralled to Gabe Chambers for a 57-yard completion to the six-yard line. Cochran connected with Peterson three plays later for a touchdown -- Peterson's second of the day. Peterson added the two-point conversion to trim the Lindsey Wilson lead to 20-17. Following the Faulkner kickoff and a pair of Lindsey Wilson runs, the Blue Raiders faced a third and five from their own 32-yard line. Cresap connected with Corey Smith for a six-yard completion to move the chains. Two Haney runs and 14 yards later, Cresap lined up in victory formation to claim the win. Lindsey Wilson out-gained the Eagles 345-344 in total offense and won the turnover battle 3-2. The Blue Raiders improve to 21-1 all-time when forcing more turnovers. The Blue Raiders extend their winning streak to a program-best seven straight and earn the program's first-ever 10-win season with the victory.
