No. 9 LW Volleyball cruises to 3-0 victory over Pikeville Special to ColumbiaMagazine.com. Blue Raiders hit .397 as a team committing just eight attacking errors By Charlie Balcom PIKEVILLE, KY - The ninth-ranked Lindsey Wilson volleyball team powered their way to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-23) sweep of host Pikeville (Ky.) on Thursday night at the UPike Gymnasium. The Blue Raiders (21-2, 8-0 Mid-South Conference) have now won 17-straight matches on the year and 27-consecutive regular-season MSC matches dating back to the 2012 season. Pikeville falls to 12-11 on the year and are still looking for their first conference win, now sitting at 0-8 in the MSC. Lindsey Wilson came ready to play as they jumped out to a double-digit lead in the opening set at the 17-7 mark. The Bears would get it no closer than 11 points the rest of the way as Nadelina Nesheva’s back-to-back kills put the finishing touches on the 25-12 opening set win. The Blue Raiders hit .625 as a team with just one attack error in the set. The powerful offensive display continued in set two as Lindsey Wilson hit .450 as a squad, again with just one attacking error. Pikeville held a slight 4-3 lead early in set two. The Blue Raiders took the lead right back with seven-straight points to make it 10-4. Pikeville came within five at the 10-5 mark, but the Bears would get no closer as Lindsey Wilson cruised to a 25-14 set two victory. Set three did not have the same attacking fortunes as the first two frames, but the Blue Raiders still managed to hit a .206. A pair of service aces by Pikeville’s Chelsea Staples gave the Bears a 6-5 lead. It would be the last lead of the night for Pikeville as the Blue Raiders retook control and emerged with a 20-14 lead. The Bears would not go away quietly as they fought back to within three at 24-21, and a pair of service aces made it 24-23, but a Nesheva kill put an end to any hopes of a comeback, ending the match 25-23. Lindsey Wilson finished the night with an attacking percentage of .397 and just eight errors, six of which came in the final set. The eight errors are tied for the second-lowest this season, trailing only the seven Lindsey Wilson had in the first meeting with Pikeville on Sept. 29. The Blue Raider defense recorded seven blocks and limited the Bears to just a .102 attacking percentage with 18 errors. Lindsey Wilson had nine service aces, tied for their second-highest output this season. Nesheva was the lone Blue Raider in double-digit kills with 11. Sarah Shilling accounted for six kills with a .417 attacking percentage. It marks the 11th time this season she has finished with an attacking percentage of .400 or higher. Brianna Bartlet led with 17 assists, followed by Makenzie Montano with 14. Caitlyn Tino had eight digs and Catie Cline had one solo block and four block assists. Connor Cook led Pikeville with nine kills while Sydney Morris finished with 20 assists. Caitlynn Pfaadt had nine digs. Earlier in the night, the Lindsey Wilson junior varsity team won their fourth-consecutive match of the season, defeating Pikeville’s junior varsity squad 2-1 (25-23, 21-25, 15-11). Morgan Johnson paced the team with seven kills while Rachel Greene added six. Katie Koper led with 10 digs, followed by Kalie Winkler with nine. Koper added 12 assists while Greene had five blocks in the win. This story was posted on 2014-10-10 07:17:35
