Click on headline for complete story with photo(s) By Duane Bonifer News from Lindsey Wilson College COLUMBIA, KY. (26 Oct 2014) - A total of 34 future nurses took a big step Sunday afternoon, at Lindsey Wilson College. The 34 LWC students participated in the college's fifth-annual Nursing Ceremony of Blessing & Transition, held in V.P. Henry Auditorium. The ceremony prepared the students - sophomores who are in their first year of LWC's bachelor of science nursing program - to symbolically enter their profession. Assistant Chaplain Carol Weddle blesses hands LWC Assistant Chaplain Carol Weddle blessed their hands, then they received a monogrammed white laboratory coat, also know as "the coat of compassion." The program's faculty also welcomed the students into the profession. "We hope that they understand that their practice is blessed and that their coat symbolizes compassion that will provide to all patients and families," said Dr. Marian Smith, LWC nursing division chair. Smith said the event is also an opportunity for the nursing students to celebrate their professional moment with their family members and friends. Event is important milestone, Dr. Smith notes "There are points in every person's life that become important milestones," she said. "This is a time for us all to pause briefly this afternoon and to recognize that these students have been accepted into a nursing program. "Getting into a program of nursing is very, very difficult. It is something that takes a lot of work to get in and it takes a lot of work to stay in. So we're here to push pause and congratulate these students." Smith said that many of the students who were accepted into the LWC nursing program wrote on their application that they either felt called to become a nurse or wanted to "give back to the world through nursing." Leitchfield, KY sophomore joining two family members in profession LWC nursing sophomore Alisa Johnston of Leitchfield, KY, said she wants to become a nurse because two of her family members are nurses "and both of them kind of inspired me because I watched them succeed and help people for so long." And Johnston said Sunday's ceremony was an important step in her professional journey. "It made it seem like it was actually beginning to happen, and I'm just another step closer to graduating and fulfilling my goals," she said.
