Donate Life KY Scholarship winners announced

From Shelley Snyder

Out of an impressive pool of more than 70 applicants hailing from 38 counties across Kentucky, 20 extraordinary individuals have been selected to receive 2024 Donate Life Kentucky Scholarships valued at $1000 each. These students have demonstrated exceptional dedication to promoting the Donate Life mission and educating their peers about the life-saving impact of registering as an organ, eye, and tissue donor.

"For over 30 years, the Circuit Clerk's office issued driver's license and asked every customer about registering as a donor and giving $1 to public education about organ, eye and tissue donation. Although we no longer issue driver's licenses, we remain steadfast in our commitment to helping our community through education and outreach about this lifechanging Donate Life mission. In our county, and every county in Kentucky, people have been saved and healed by the gift of life. Today, over 1000 Kentuckians still wait for their gift of life. Organ, eye and tissue donors are heroes," explains Dennis Loy, Adair Circuit Clerk.

"Giving back to these students, many of whom are donor families & recipients, is such an honor. I extend a heartfelt congratulations to all the scholarship winners and express appreciation to every applicant for their dedication to the Donate Life mission."

The Donate Life Kentucky Scholarship winners for 2024 are:

Letter: Thank you for reminder about signs on right of ways

Vicky Pike writes:
Thank you for posting the article from the Kentucky Transportation Department on illegally placed signs being removed. Signs posted on the right of way slow up the mowing process and block drivers view when turning at intersections.

If you need to put a sign up please do it with the permission of the adjoining landowner where it is far enough back that it doesn't hinder mowing crews and block the view of oncoming traffic. We have enough accidents as it is. Dont put a sign that could block a drivers view. It's just common sense.

Big rigs off the historic square - ideas

By Linda Waggener

Ideas have been coming in about how to encourage large trucks to use the Veterans Memorial Bypass instead of the historic Public Square in Columbia. And I have an idea to add to those linked below.

Let's agree to make one thing clear right up front - we respect truck drivers. Almost everything that comes in and goes out, here and all across America, does so by truck. Drivers keep them going day and night.

But, what if the City/County designates an educational campaign?

Signs placed on right of way being removed

From the Kentucky Department of Highways

Mowing cycles are under way and illegally placed items along state maintained right of way areas are being removed. Residents, business operators and property owners along US and KY routes are reminded no signage is allowed on right of way other than official highway signs and items approved through a permit process.

Particularly, with yard sales and property sales commonly taking place in spring along with the May Primary, related signs must be placed beyond right of way limits.
