Commentary: What a great place we live in!!

My opinion is that we live in the best community in the world. The people of this community never cease to amaze me. - WILLIAM GRIDER

By William Grider

Being a firefighter I have always gotten to see firsthand just how great the people of our community are. Sure our community has its differences just like every other does.

We disagree and fuss over what we feel and think is right and how things should be done. It's only natural. Honestly, it is one of the things that makes this Country great I don't normally say much but I feel the need to do so today.

I have been a firefighter for many years. It is one of the most fulfilling jobs in the world and at the same time it can be one of the hardest. It has allowed me to see and do things I never imagined. It has allowed me to meet some amazing people and see some unforgettable things. We don't do if for praise or recognition. Actually I prefer not to be noticed. We do it because we love helping others!! Making a difference in someone's life is praise and recognition enough. We don't see ourselves as brave of heroic, we are just doing what we love. Sure we have heroes such as Charles Sparks, Tony Grider and all the men and women who die protecting us!! We are just doing what we are called to do.

All that being said, I guess you are wondering what my purpose for this article or what my opinion is. My opinion is that we live in the best community in the world. The people of this community never cease to amaze me. I have had the honor of working with many charities, mainly the WHAS Crusade for Children. Each and every year the people of Adair County open their hearts and pockets to help make each charity event a success. Even in the bad economy we are going through people still give at record rates.

I have also had the privilege of witnessing how this community pulls together to honor others. Like three years ago when we lost Charles Sparks and most recently my friend/brother Tony Grider, just to mention a few. The way everyone turned out to support us was amazing. I don't believe I have ever seen as much food as there was at the firehouse yesterday. It was a sad time but it also was such a great time to see so many people gathered to honor one of our own. I am proud to say "MY" community made it all possible as they always do when needed!!

I want to personally say THANK YOU to all the people of Adair County. All of you together make this community the best place to live in the world!!

God bless each of you!!
