KY Color: The case of Grey Squirrel dining on Loblolly Pine Cones

Click on headline for essay with photo(s)

By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester
Kentucky Division of Forestry

There is a Squirrel of the Grey variety dining high up in my Loblolly Pine Trees. We've been living here since the early nineties and other than a passerby grabbing a quick snack on his way to what would be considered more "top shelf" menu items such as Hickory Nuts, Black Gum Berries, and a whole plethora of Acorns, this is the only Grey Squirrel who seems to have a preference for our Pine Cones.

It matters not to me what he eats but I sure would love for him to eat in trees under which I'm not working.

Those heavy, green pine cones that I'm sure he just "accidently" drops can be quite damaging to heads and shoulders not to mention the disconcerting aspect of being bombarded by an animal inferior to the human species. - Billy Joe Fudge
