Supt. Alan W. Reed - Tax rate essentially unchanged for 2014

Compensating rate approved is based on formula with a goal of school property tax revenue being the same as last year. Superintendent Reed says that some taxpayers may see a very slightly lower bill, some may pay a very slightly higher bill, but overall, he said, the school board is anticipating the same property tax revenues and last fiscal year. He says that Adair County was one of the few School Districts which did not adopt a 4% rate increase. "We were able to do this because of school consolidation and other fiscal changes that saved the district substantial dollars."

By Alan W. Reed, Superintendent
Adair County School District

At last Thursday evening's school board meeting the board elected not to pass the 4% increase for next year but instead chose to take the compensating rate, plus exonerations (prior year losses). By going with the compensating tax rate for 2014-15, the school district will bring in approximately the same revenue as it did this year, 2013-14.

The tax rate for 2013-14 was 50.1 (50.1 cents for every $100 of assessed property value). The 2014-15 compensating rate is 50.3 cents for every $100 of assessed property value.

With exonerations the total tax rate will be 50.5 cents per $100 of assess property value.

A majority of the state's school districts chose the 4% increase this year because of several increased expenditures that are not within their district's control. These include: KSBIT bailout, rank and step increases for employees, sick leave payments, and increases in employer contribution rates to the state retirement system.

The Adair County School District was able to leave the tax rate essentially unchanged for 2014-15 because of school consolidation and other fiscal changes that saved the district substantial dollars.
