Goal Driven, Resilient, Influential Teens/GRIT for ACHS

Article distinguishes programs: The Leader in Me and Personal Greatness: GRIT (ACHS) work will be game changers for our school district and community if we will all embrace and work to live by the habits. We have a shared responsibility to ensure that every learner in our school district has opportunities to find their voice and leave Adair County High School as people we are proud to call our neighbors. The Personal Greatness GRIT model for Adair County High School and all of the 23 Race to the Top-District (RTT-D) high schools participating in the grant has now been developed by Franklin Covey and the kid-FRIENDLy RTT-D leadership and is ready to transform the high school experience. The process of developing and shaping teens who are Goal Driven, Resilient, and Influential in their schools and communities began at ACHS on Monday Night August 11th during freshman orientation. This is just the beginning of a major culture shift happening not only at Adair County High but at high schools across the kid-FRIENDLy RTT-D Green River and Ohio Valley Educational Cooperatives (GRECC and OVEC).




"The Adair County High faculty and staff spent many hours during early release Fridays last year learning and discussing the Leader in Me work. We had great sessions brainstorming about how the process could be applied at our high school effectively, " said Troy Young, ACHS principal. " A major concern that kept coming up during our book study was that almost all of the schools who are successfully implementing Leader In Me (LIM) are elementary and middle schools. Our faculty loved what we were learning, but we questioned whether we could make this work at our high school. However, we have a great staff who is committed to making Adair County High a place where students are excited to be and the GRIT model will give us direction and the opportunity to be really innovative in developing student leaders and transforming our school. We have a unique chance to create something that other schools will want to emulate. Our faculty is fully embracing the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and we are all ready to be better people and charge ahead as leaders in implementing the Personal Greatness: GRIT model."

GRIT addresses the need to develop a process at the high school level that builds upon the great work of Leader in Me at the elementary and middle school levels. It acknowledges that learners at the high school level are maturing and require a more advanced process to be in place to promote growth in leadership qualities. To distinguish the high school work from Leader in Me at the lower grade levels, the high school process will be referred to as PERSONAL GREATNESS: GRIT ​not Leader in Me.

The GRIT process, incorporates and builds upon Dr. Stephen Covey's 8th Habit: Finding Your Voice, in addition to the 7 Habits. Everyone in the school is viewed as a potential leader in the school and community. Adair County High School is excited to embark upon the GRIT journey and has already formed a teacher GRIT Team for the year. A student GRIT team will be formed soon after school begins and will be called upon to lead this work in the school.

GRIT teacher leader and U. S. History teacher, Tina Watson said, "Our first undertaking as a teacher GRIT team has been to transform our Freshman Orientation. GRIT team member and math teacher, Dawn Baker, suggested that we try a new approach and we received lots of positive feedback on the restructuring of the night. The Student Ambassadors, led by school counselor Ann Young, also played a key role in making the night a success. They really stepped up as leaders in the school and were able to answer questions and address concerns from a student perspective. The night also gave us a great opportunity to briefly introduce the 7 Habits to our freshmen and their parents. Mr. Chase Coffey, math teacher and GRIT member, has worked very hard to create presentations and activities to engage our students and families as we undertake this process when school begins."

​Adair County High invites you to learn as much as you can about the 7 Habits and the 8th Habit of Highly Effective People as we embrace these timeless principles and apply them at school. The changes we seek won't happen overnight but we are committed to seeing that the process continues to evolve and improves our school culture.

Dr. Stephen Covey said, "Life is really about coming home." The ACHS family believes that all college and career readiness efforts begin at home with your family. We know that the families we serve come in all shapes and sizes, but the beauty of living the habits is that they can be applied to and will work in any situation if you give them a chance.
