Joyce Coomer: On driving Bypass/Highway 55 South intersection One can never be too careful while driving, and should always be aware of their surroundings. There is no such thing as a dangerous road, only inattentive, negligent and scheming drivers for which responsible drivers must constantly be on the lookout. - JOYCE M. COOMER By Joyce M. Coomer Personal Commentary I have had a few near misses at this intersection, mostly people pulling out into my lane of traffic then slowing down, and have seen more than one driver sail all the way across Highway 55 from the bypass to the road leading to IMO (I don't know the correct name of that road) and also going the other direction, without stopping at the end of those roads and without even slowing down. Since I drive this road daily, to and from work, I always approach this area with caution, keeping a close watch on the intersection to see if there are any vehicles present and how they are traveling. The one incident that has concerned me the most happened late one afternoon, and I suspect the driver of an oncoming vehicle, sitting in the left turn lane waiting to turn onto the bypass, was attempting to cause an accident by pulling into my lane of traffic (I was traveling south on Highway 55.). There was a pickup truck behind me, which turned left into the industrial park area, and a car in front of me which turned right onto the bypass. I had been watching these two vehicles, and also watching for oncoming traffic so had seen this car waiting to make a left turn. Just as I got into the intersection, the driver of this car started to make a left turn. I saw what he was doing and hit my brakes. I wasn't traveling very fast as I had slowed down when the driver in front of me slowed to turn right, so I reduced my speed even more. The driver of the turning car slowed down, speeded up a little, slowed down again, then stopped at a point that if I had continued moving, I would've hit his car broadside -- he was completely blocking the southbound lane of Highway 55 at this point. I was going slow enough by this time that I could quickly come to a complete stop (thank Heaven for anti-lock brakes), about 40 feet from this vehicle. Even after I stopped, the driver of this car still seemed reluctant to turn onto the bypass. There were no vehicles behind me so the road was clear for him to make a left turn. It seemed longer, but I probably sat there at least 30 seconds before this person finished his left hand turn onto the bypass. From his actions, I could only surmise that he was attempting to cause an accident, and make it appear to be my fault. One can never be too careful while driving, and should always be aware of their surroundings. There is no such thing as a dangerous road, only inattentive, negligent and scheming drivers for which responsible drivers must constantly be on the lookout. - Joyce M.
