Downtown Traffic Comment: Wants more monitoring

Says she can't count number of times she's almost been hit on the Square

By Carolyn Williamson
Personal Commentary

I think the entire square needs monitoring by the police. Can't tell you how many times since moving to Columbia eight years ago I have been almost hit in the square.

First off, I think people need instructions on what STOP or YIELD means. They come up Jamestown and pull right out into the square thinking they don't have to yield to the traffic going around the square already. I think people need to know who has the right of way. Also, people in the square go around the middle of the lanes and then cut in front of others to turn off down the 4 side streets?

We need to know if we are going around the square we need to stay next to the old court house and if we are turning on any of the four streets to move to the right side of the lane and not cut in front of traffic. I see the potential for a deadly accident there.

Just my humble opinion. I think most of it is that people don't have the rules for safe driving and/or think they can just disobey the yield rules. Do children here get Drivers Education classes before they are licensed?

Thanks for letting me vent. Keep up the good work. - Carolyn Williamson
