Joyce Coomer: Crossing the square, take two Gives examples of four people crossing streets and asks which ones are most likely to be hurt Followup to: Joyce Coomer: Taught to take responsibility for own safety By Joyce Coomer Personal opinion I just returned from getting lunch and in the process of driving from work to the top of the hill and back, I saw four people cross streets. The first gentleman crossed in front of me on Merchant St., about halfway between Monroe St. and Campbellsville St. He was talking on his cell phone and barely glanced my way and if he looked toward Campbellsville St., any eye or head movement wasn't discernible to me. A lady crossed Campbellsville St. at the crosswalk on the square. She stopped before stepping into the crosswalk, and didn't step out into traffic until the person two cars ahead of me stopped their vehicle. While this lady was crossing the street, she looked both directions several times. A gentleman crossed Jamestown St. at the crosswalk on the square. He stood a foot or two from the street until the driver in front of me stopped their vehicle. The gentleman crossed to the center of the street and stopped there until the driver coming onto the square stopped his vehicle. Then, and only then, did this gentleman continue on across the street. When I was coming back onto the square from the top of Jamestown Hill, a woman crossed Jamestown St. in the crosswalk on the square. She didn't deign to stop before stepping out into the traffic flow, nor did she look either direction while she was crossing the street. She didn't even look up from her view of the blacktop. Which of these pedestrians would be most likely to be involved in a vehicle/pedestrian accident? - Joyce M. Coomer This story was posted on 2014-08-07 11:31:12
