The Bridge over Cabin Creek on Old Montpelier Road, opened today, Thursday, July 31, 2014, is the 20th new bridge built as part of the Adair County Road system. in the Administration of Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton.

A picnic cookout buffett was spread for the men of the Adair County Road Department honoring their work. This meal has become a tradition, with a table set to honor them before each new span is open to the public.

The weather was perfect, with a slight breeze providing an early fall feel, for the occasion. A few short remarks were made by Magistrate Sammy Baker, then the gather turned to enjoying what may have been the best meal, served in the most beautiful setting for the occasion, in all of Adair County today.

Talk at table turned to memories, matters of families

With the meal, the talk at table turned to matters of families, of residence moves, of memories, of impending weddings, and children and grandchildren. David Harden, and ACRD employee who grew up in the area, lives just up the hill from the bridge.

Joe Coffey - who was there with his bride, Ada Troutman Coffey of the Joppa community, on the other side of Cabin Creek - remembered days when there wasn't even a dry bridge across the creek, and of the times when he had to wade the creek to get to Pleasant Hill School, as his father had done before him.

It was hard to imagine today in on a peaceful summer day that it ever happens, but the stream does get rambunctuous at times, he said. But he said that, in all likelihood, no is likely to ever overflow the road now, which allows residents from Acree Road across Cabin Creek easier access to KY 92, to Glens Fork and Columbia.

The Coffey's would be the first to cross the bridge after it's official opening to the public.

The meal was grand. Here's what was served and who provided it:
CJE Ann Melton and Third District Magistrate Sammy Baker provided 12 oz. ribeye steaks, grilled perfectly by ACRD employees John Denton and Tom Brock.

Judge Melton provided pasta salad.

There was a decorated cake by Judy Watson.

Fresh corn cut from the cob, real mashed potatoes, and banana pudding were provided by Brenda Bryant.

County Finance officer Gale Cowan cooked fresh green beans.

CJE Administrative Assistant Lisa Greer cooked cheesy potatoes and brought fresh cut tomatoes from her garden.

Nadene Baker, the First Lady of the District, always has a surprise; this time some unforgettable cowboy beans. Neighbors, Joe and Ada Coffey brought cake brought sliced heirloom tomatoes from Joe's garden.
All the food was donated; none of the cost was at county expense.
Here's the list of bridges, by District, with date of construction which have been built in the two terms CJE Melton has served:
  • District 1 - Grassy Springs (2007), Short Creek (2007), Snake Creek (2007), Sulpher Creek (2010), Purdy Sano (2010), Avery Rooks (2013)
  • District 2 - Creekbend (2007), and Clear Springs (2013)
  • District 3 - Cosby Cundiff Road (2010), Walnut Grove Road (2012), and Old Montpelier Road (2014)
  • District 4 - Chestnut Grove (2007), Brock-Burris (2007), Flatwoods (2008), Gradyville Country Club Road (2009), Leatherwood Church (2011) and Frank Dohoney Road (2014)
  • District 6 - Spout Springs (2007), Steve Breeding (2010)
The accomplishment represents almost one-fourth of the counties slightly over 80 bridges maintained by the Adair County Road Department.

Joe & Ada Coffey first to cross span after official opening

2014-07-31 - Old Montpelier Road, District 3, Adair C - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Joe & Ada Troutman Coffey were accorded the honor of being the first to officially cross the new Cabin Creek Bridge, and did it in style in their Kawasaki Ranger. Growing up, they lived on opposite sides of Cabin Creek. Above they are momentarily head toward KY 92 at Pleasant Hill, the route to the Troutman family home at Joppa. After the ceremonial crossing, they returned in the opposite direction to the beautiful farm they shared on Old Montpelier near Acree Road. The photo was taken just after noon, Thursday, July 31, 2014.

Sur le pont, Cabin Creek, l'on y eata, etc., etc.

2014-08-01 - Cabin Creek, Old Montpelier Road, District 3, Adair County, KY - Photo CM staff photo. The Bridge Restaurant. The ad hoc outdoor cafe set up temporarily to honor the county's Bridgebuilders on Thursday, July 31, 2014, was such a delightful idea, one wonders why more Bridge Restaurants aren't done. Oddly, a cursory search on the internet indicates that the idea is an old one, but most bridge restaurants cited are over highways, not streams. There must be a restaurant somewhere on a bridge over a stream. One would think of it as being a fish house or seafood restaurant, but the one above drew unanimous praise for the perfect grilled ribeyes prepared by grillmaster Tom Brock, wearing a proper BBQ cowboy hat, standing behind his pulpit - his black grill. (The question: Does anyone know of a restaurant on a bridge over a stream? And where does one put one in Columbia? Seems like someone had that idea for the old Green Hills Road span over Russell Creek, when the iron bridge became redundant). With sincere apologies for the bad Frenglish in the headline. - EW
