A picnic cookout buffett was spread for the men of the Adair County Road Department honoring their work. This meal has become a tradition, with a table set to honor them before each new span is open to the public. The weather was perfect, with a slight breeze providing an early fall feel, for the occasion. A few short remarks were made by Magistrate Sammy Baker, then the gather turned to enjoying what may have been the best meal, served in the most beautiful setting for the occasion, in all of Adair County today. Talk at table turned to memories, matters of families With the meal, the talk at table turned to matters of families, of residence moves, of memories, of impending weddings, and children and grandchildren. David Harden, and ACRD employee who grew up in the area, lives just up the hill from the bridge. Joe Coffey - who was there with his bride, Ada Troutman Coffey of the Joppa community, on the other side of Cabin Creek - remembered days when there wasn't even a dry bridge across the creek, and of the times when he had to wade the creek to get to Pleasant Hill School, as his father had done before him. It was hard to imagine today in on a peaceful summer day that it ever happens, but the stream does get rambunctuous at times, he said. But he said that, in all likelihood, no is likely to ever overflow the road now, which allows residents from Acree Road across Cabin Creek easier access to KY 92, to Glens Fork and Columbia. The Coffey's would be the first to cross the bridge after it's official opening to the public. The meal was grand. Here's what was served and who provided it: CJE Ann Melton and Third District Magistrate Sammy Baker provided 12 oz. ribeye steaks, grilled perfectly by ACRD employees John Denton and Tom Brock. All the food was donated; none of the cost was at county expense. Here's the list of bridges, by District, with date of construction which have been built in the two terms CJE Melton has served:
