FM2 July 19, 2014 Close-up: Photographs at the market

Click on headline for item with album

By Shamarie Claiborne

I had a chance to take photos at the Farmers Market on the Square, and have put them into an album, along with photos by Janet Parrish and others. It's always a fun place to be, whether to buy Jay's BBQ, produce, or just visit with folks I know, and today, it was a time to celebrate the biggest raffle the ADAIR band has ever had. The raffle winner will have a choice of a Polaris rzr800 or a Ranger800, to be given away at the Mark Twain Invitational Marching Invitational Band Festival on Saturday, August 23, 2014. We had a great day with the raffle ticket sales. The money goes for a great cost - it will help pay our transportation cost to some big events.

Farmers Market on the Square July 19, 2014: Mark Dicken

2014-07-19 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Mark Dicken looked up after straightening a stack of Shaker Oval Boxes into a 6 box tower. The boxes were inspired by a trip to Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill, in Mercer County. He says that the boxes, which nest and which have been called "Tupperware before there was Tupperware," were the Shaker communities biggest selling item. A six-box set, ideal for a nice birthday, anniversary, Christmas or other special occasion sell for $200. Today was his first time at the Farmers Market on the Square. He also makes pens and offers stands for iPads, and cell phones. The pens range from $20 up. The cell phone stands works as a rather elegant business card holder, and sell for just $5. The iPad holder is $20. His crafts company is "Mark's Wood Creations," 203 Coakley Street, Campbellsville, KY. Mark Dicken had great things to say about the market. "Wayne and Barbara Armitage were absolutely wonderful," he said. "We were able to meet many of the of the other vendors, who were very welcoming. Many of the customers showed a great deal of interest in the oval boxes and were very gracious in their comments about them." His phone number is 270-403-9033, email: markdicken@windstream.net, for those who may have missed him at today's fair. - CM

FM2 close up: I can vouch for Jay's BBQ tenderloin

2014-07-19 - Adair Annex Parking Lot, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne.
I can vouch for the BBQ Tenderloin Sandwich I had at Jay's BBQ. I'm pretty sure I can vouch for the advice he was getting from my buddy Ralph Roy Waggener, left and his father, judging from the broad smile on Jay's face. LOL. Actually, Ralph and Mr. Cox were really well behaved. Ralph was waiting for his sandwich, and Mr. Cox makes frequent runs for Jay when he runs out of supplies. Jay must be doing something very right. He was very, very busy today. - Shamarie Claiborne

FM2 close up: Beautiful blackberries

Debbie & Danny Burris, at the D & D Longview Angus Farm booth, had a display which just makes a body hungry. These blackberries looked so delicious, it was hard not to buy 'em and eat 'em on the spot, though most of us know of even higher callings: Blackberry Jam, Blackberry Cobbler, and now, after Debbie Burris introduced it, Blackberry Juice. - Shamarie Claiborne

FM2 close up: Sweet banana peppers

Wayne and Barbara Armitage have practically a Whole Foods Supermarket at the Farmers Market. She's the founder of the market, which has been a smashing success since its inception. The Armitages have everything from plants to yummy baked goods, to jams and salsas - even popcorn - and still have time to grow great looking produce like these banana peppers. - Shamarie Claiborne

FM2 close up: Eggplant makes colorful photo

2014-07-19 - Adair Annex Parking Lot, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne.
I think this eggplant was at the big double-wide Coburg stand. They were behind Jay's BBQ, and had a store full of stuff. Everything was beautiful arranged, and the folks were so friendly. Didn't get a chance to talk to them, they were so busy. There was eggplant at several of the stands. Some were melon shaped like these, and the honey place also had long, cucumber shaped ones which she said were sweeter than the "regular" eggplants. - Shamarie
