Barbara Armitage: Blackberry Hands You can tell a lot about a person by looking at their hands Click on headline for complete story By Barbara Armitage I've always thought that you can tell a lot about a person by looking at their hands. How old they are, how hard they work for a living and in my case you can tell it's berry picking time at Tucker's Station Farms. First my fingers were stained red and I felt like I was announcing to the world that it was strawberry picking time. The Blueberries were up next and they aren't too bad until you pick one that's a bit overripe and then it will leave your skin a lovely shade of blue. The Blackberries are the worst and so for the next month or so there won't be a thing I can do about the permanent purple stain on my hands, it's my badge of honor so to speak. This is my life. There are no manicures on the farm and after losing the diamond out of my engagement ring out there somewhere in the garden I've even given up wearing jewelry. What I have come to realize over the past few years is that I have my Gramma Till's hands. Tillie Mae was my great grandmother. Like her there are freckles on my hands from too much sun over the years. My nails are kept short and are - at least once a day - clean and unpolished. I can see the beginnings of the arthritis that plagued her taking hold in my fingers. And like my Gramma Till's hands mine are working hands. Gramma Till was a hard working woman. She was outspoken and had a wonderful sense of humor. I think that one of the things I liked about her was that she always made me feel that I was smart and that my opinion mattered. That and the fact that she always had a Yoo-hoo in the icebox for me. Gotta go. I've suddenly got a craving for a Yoo-hoo. This story was posted on 2014-07-17 05:53:47
