ACES Summer Camp SAFARI provides many adventures

Summer Camp SAFARI was provided by ACES's 21 Century Community Learning Center program and coordinated by Ms. Pam Bivens. Collaborative partners were Camp Rocket at Adair Primary Center, the Adair County Schools Food Service, Migrant and Transportation Departments, ACES Family Resource Center and University of KY College of Agricultural 4-H Program. Additional support for the program was provided by The United Way of South Central Kentucky.

Unsuspecting visitors to Adair County Elementary School (ACES) this summer may have expected to see an empty building void of learning and children's laughter. Instead they have been greeted with live snakes, rockets being launched, children encased in bubbles and science and art experiments gone wild.

Adair County Elementary has been the site of Summer Camp SAFARI, a four week summer day camp. Over fifty 3rd - 5th grade students participated in a variety of educational and enrichment learning opportunities designed to promote extended learning beyond the traditional school year.

In art class, students enjoyed working with clay and learned how to pour ceramic molds and were able to fire and finish their own ceramic piece. Science class provided unique opportunities for students to view snakes, create mini greenhouses, build and launch rockets and enclose their classmates in giant bubbles. Physical education opportunities were offered each day and students also participated in reading and math activities designed to demonstrate that learning is great fun. A special treat for the campers was a trip to the Adair County Sportsman Club for archery and fishing.

When school begins in the fall, the adventure will continue as Camp SAFARI will provide before and after-school extended learning and enrichment opportunities for ACES 3rd - 5th grade students.
