Billy Joe Fudge: It's Virginia Creeper - not poisonous. Not benign Virginia Creeper can be very damaging to building facades Comments re photo 55647 Poison Ivy along the Theatre Walk or something benign by Billy Joe Fudge Definitely, Virginia Creeper. A spokesman at the Great Wooded South\'s School of Common Sense Science states that "although our forefathers often referred to Virginia Creeper as Five-leafed Poison Oak, our researchers have never encountered a proven case of someone being infected by it". Additionally, he stated that almost all the locals from the past referred to Poison Ivy as Poison Oak. Poison Oak is a plant that grows in the Western United States and can often be free standing as opposed to being a climber like our Poison Ivy. The spokesman continued that although the "something needs to be done" statement was made concerning the poison to humans aspect; we must remember that Virginia Creeper, although beautiful, can be very damaging to building facades. It attaches itself to wood encouraging rot and to brick, grout and concrete thereby causing it to weaken and crumble. -- This story was posted on 2014-06-30 08:46:34
